The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: WGVA
I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.
MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
“Coach, both teams shot poorly in the Connecticut game. Together they made 13 of 51 three pointers, 25%.. It seemed as if most of the attempts came from behind the NBA three point line, which was painted in a bold color. The college line was in white and less noticeable. Could the players have bene confused about where their line was? And should the three point line be the same at all levels, just as the basket is the same height? Maybe if a three pointer was an NBA three pointer, only the players who were really good at that would shoot them and other players would spend more time on their offensive skills inside the arc.”
COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. In recent years they have started out doing one hour shows and then shifted to two hour shows in January. When they do two hour shows. I will do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)
(It’s still an hour show at this point.)
SU will play Boston U. on Saturday and Georgetown the following Saturday. JB: “We can only play on Saturday the next two weeks due to the tests the players have to take. It’s a great time for academics and a great time for practice. We’ll have five practices to work on things between Boston U. and Georgetown. “
About the state of the team: “Our movement has bene pretty good. We are getting plenty of good shots…. South Carolina was a really good team, although they’ve lost their best player, Sindarius Thornwell, due to a suspension. He’ll be hard to replace. Wisconsin is tough to beat at home. Against Connecticut we got some good shots and played good defense… We were not near the guy on the three point shot. If the final shot hits the rim, we get the rebound. The guy who got it was standing next to the basket, a bad place to get a rebound.” Matt Park said that everyone was hoping for one more SU-Connecticut overtime in the Garden.
Liam in Pompey put his question in an interesting way: “How has the team been playing? They have not been playing well of late, as you may know.” Jim did know that the team hasn’t been playing well of late. “Our defense has been OK- not perfect but OK. Our offense is as bad as I can remember in our three losses. It’s disappointing, although it may not take a long time to fix it. We’ve got to get better shots and the players have to put the ball in the basket. .” Matt suggested that if they’d done that two more times against Connecticut, they would have won. JB: “You aren’t going to win games scoring 50 points. We had a good first half on offense against Wisconsin. If we’d had a good second ahylf, it would have bene a close game and that would have bene pretty good in their arena. We’ve got 5 new guys playing in different combinations. We’ve got to keep working and be positive.”
I called in my question. JB: “I’d like to see the line back there. it would cut back on the three point attempts and make it a better game. I’d also like to see a 24 second clock. But there’s no movement to chance either one right now….The NBA line is very visible and it can fool the players. I haven’t checked the tape but I’ve thought in other games that players tended to shoot from there. I’ll have somebody look at it” Matt asked it was confusion or did they want to prove their skills from there. JB felt it was confusion but said “The best ones can make it from there. Dallas Moore of North Florida never shot from the college line. All his were from 25-26 feet away. But marginal shooters might not try it so much if the line was that far out.“ Matt pointed out that the two teams made 25% of their three point shots in the Connecticut game “But they didn’t do much better inside the line.” JB: “Some of it was defense, some not shooting well.”
They talked about DaJuan Coleman’s effectiveness. Matt noted his 16 rebounds but also that it was a game with a lot of rebounds to be had. JB said “He’s making the 10-12 footer now. He came back last year after not having played for two years. it takes a year to do the thing you’d like to do. If he had the legs he had in high school, he could be a tremendous college player. If the other guys were playing like he is, we’d be OK. I don’t think I’ve ever had less than 1-2 guys playing well. We need to get to 3-4 and will need 4-5 against the best teams. People under-estimate the experience we lost. Our veterans are not playing great a team will only go as far its veterans will take them. “
They had a trivia question about the number of times we have had crowds of 30,000 or more at the Dome. The total is 80- Matt gave the audience that information and also that Georgetown was responsible for 17 of them, more than any other team. What school had produced the second largest number of 30,000+ crowds? He even gave the number – 9. Can you guess?
Matt also said that in the 1989-90 season we averaged 29,900 fans per home game, a record that’s not going to be broken any time soon. JB: “You’d think that was impossible, with no parking and its winter-time….We are averaging 21-22 this year because the games have not been on TV.”
This year’s Georgetown game will be the occasion for honoring the late Pearl Washington. His family will be there. it will also be a fund raiser for pediatric cancer research and a scholarship fund in the Pearls’ name to help athletes do what he did- come back to finish their degrees. (Pearl was working on his master’s).
Matt asked if he’s seen any of Klay Thompson’s 60 points game. Somebody kept track and said he dribble the ball 11 times in that game. JB: “He and Reddick are the bets catch and shoot players in the business.”
Dan In Syracuse asked “Which SU alum in the NBA was most fun to work with? JB: “Lots of guys. Rakeem because he improved so much over time. Tyler Ennis for what he did in that one year. He’s now struggling for playing time on James Hardin’s team. You can’t win without good players and we’ve been fortunate to have many of them.”
Dan asked a follow up question asking Jim to compare this year’s team with e 2003 champions. It seemed an odd question at this juncture. “This year the players are trying to figure out how they fit in. It’s taken longer than I’d hoped. Once we started playing good teams, it’s been hard. We’ve had two full games of bad offense and one half in one game. Our offense never had problems scoring in 2003. We had Carmelo, Gerry, Hakim, Billy Edelin and Josh Pace. We need to make lay-ups and open shots.”
Pat in Syracuse was at the game and said that “When we were up 5, we looked miserable and Connecticut, despite being down 5, was happy. We just looked defeated.” JB: “We weren’t down with a lead. We never have been a team to jump up and down. Nobody’s happy when we aren’t playing well. When you lose a couple of games, nobody’s happy. We weren’t able to finish and had a horrible offensive game. We had a an offensive foul, a couple of bad possessions where we couldn’t get a good shot, got some good looks but missed them. We’re happy with a lead but not with playing poorly.”
Russell Westbrook has had 6 straight triple-doubles. Jim said that eh and James Hardin are in the same situation- “Their coaches give them the ball and let them do what they want. Russell can go get a rebound against anybody. He’s 6-4 and getting triple doubles require high energy. He’s the most fearless player I’ve ever seen. Most players can be guarded somewhat. He’s so physical and athletic and comes at you on every play. He never has a play where he doesn’t go at you. He’s the most physically gifted athlete, although Michael and LeBron are up there, too.”
Matt closed by asking Coach to summarize the attitude of the players at this point. JB: “The problem is: when you lose you get down. You don’t have that step or that hop. When you don’t move well, you don’t’ learn well. You have to really push them. Losing wears on you.” Matt suggested that the players “had a lot of things competing for their attention”. JB: “You have two hours to accomplish something. You have to focus for two hours…. Maybe playing a good team now is a good thing. Maybe the players will be looking forward to the game and be practicing better tomorrow.”
