I was a Pirates fan for many years but backed off of them and even off of baseball for several years after they fell apart on and off the field in the early 80's.
When I did watch games I gravitated toward the Mets because I preferred their broadcast crew and my best friend at work was a Mets fan and we used to discuss the games the next moring. When the Mets started to get good my interest perked up and when they got Gary Carter, who hit a home run to win his first game in a Met uniform, it peaked. They just missed it in '85 and had a season in '86 that was a season long highlight film. Gary was the guy who got the hit in the 12th inning of Game 5 vs. the Astros and the hit that began the 10th inning ralley in game 6 against the Red Sox. But I most remember him for being always such a positive guy, an attitude that some people mocked in his time, (thus his nickname, "The Kid"). I always said that his critics could piss on his plaque in the Hall of Fame.
