There are a thousand things in this story that are completely shocking and borderline unbelievable. But I have to say that one thing that really surpised me (although it's a minor thing compared to the other revelations) is the news that JB and Bernie were not close friends.

Maybe a lot of the people on this board already knew that, but I just assumed that over the 35+ years they worked together, they were close on a social level, not just Xs and Os.

To say nothing of them living across the street from each other. It is amazing to me that they aren't close friends. If they weren't close friends you'd think they would try to get a little separation from each other given that they are tied pretty tightly professionally.

Somebody posted a couple days ago that when JB moved to his current house, the Fines moved across the street shortly thereafter, to JB's surprise. But not to his pleasure.

I remember this being discussed a few times on this board (well, not THIS board, but you know what I mean) a few years ago or more. It shocked me at the time, but I remember a poster or two suggesting that things had gotten rather frosty between the two of them. Did this coincide with the naming of Hopkins as the heir apparent, perhaps? People speculated he might leave at some point... perhaps go to Florida to watch/coach near his son (I think David was considering a college in Florida? Maybe I'm mis-remembering). I wish I could remember exactly when this was, but because of this, I was actually surprised that JB came out so vehemently defensive of Bernie when the allegations arose, given what I remembered about their relationship.

I don't know if Bernie's reduced role was the result of a personal dispute, but it needed to be done. Replacing the departed Louie Orr with Troy Weaver and putting Hop on the road was what the program needed.

Understood. It's just a little convenient is all. If I were an outsider, I could easily be cynical about it, you know?

And to be fair, like I said, I WAS cynical about it when I heard it about Paterno/Sandusky.

Well, Paterno & Sandusky and the rest of the Penn State coaches would shower together after practices and games. I don't see that same level of weird perviness with SU. This is a different situation.

If I worked for him for 36 years and lived across the street, I might be pretty close with him.

Look, if guys who should know say JB and Bernie weren't that close, I'll buy it. I'm just an outsider to the situation. But it's pretty easy to be cynical about it is all.

Not a joke at all. A former grad assistant wrote about the "tradition" at Penn State of all the coaches showering together after practices and games.

Do you and I think this is a little odd? Yes. So did the grad assistant, who noted that this sort of "tradition" did not exist at any of the other schools he coached at.

Just because you're not close friends doesn't mean you can't trust someone's honesty and integrity.

I don't know how the coaching business works but I worked for the same person for 15 years and worked closely together on various projects. We weren't friends on a social level even when traveling together for various projects. I liked and respected him but never communicated with him after he left. Boeheim & Fine not being friends on a social level is understandable though the period of time they worked together w/o being friends surprises me. I think it's interesting that Bernie moved across the street from JB as I'd never have lived that close to my boss nor would I have wanted any of my employees to live next door to ME. Laurie's comment on a radio show from some time back that Bernie wasn't an assistant coach, rather the Associate Head Coach explains it. Head coaches are supposed to live on Boeheim's street.
