The making of Fran Brown

But you told me on the basketball board we couldn't afford to buy out Red? So which one is it?

Also, yes, as Steve said above, if any massive program wants Fran as their head coach, they can absolutely outbid us.
Let's put what i said about Red in context relative to Fran.

First Basketball expenditures vs Football expenditures need to be in line with the revenue and importance placed on them by the Market.

Second: I don't think that SU basketball has the capital to pay Reds buyout and spend the money required to bring in an expensive coach as you can't just buyout Red without hiring a new coach and staff. So, you are missing over half of the capital requirement.

Third: Allocating money for retention of a coach who has outperformed expectations is completely different than spending money on severance.

Understand?

None of what you said has anything that could help Syracuse retain Fran if UGA came calling.

with the world today in college, spending beyond your means has to be really thought thru.

even Factor in attendance. Only down 500-1000 a game or so from 3-4 yrs ago.

Not being good hurts but not huge in the bottom line yet compared to buy out money

Meh.

The TV $ is many multiples of attendance $.

And the TV $ still comes in as long as we’re still fielding a team in the ACC.

So yeah - there’s a hit to Cuse’s wallet due to reduced attendance, but it’s still a rounding error as compared to the steady TV $ rolling in.

None of what you said has anything that could help Syracuse retain Fran if UGA came calling.

And not just UGA.

There are easily a dozen or more P4 programs (B1G & $€¢) that could make Fran a “Godfather offer” that Cuse couldn’t possibly come close to matching.

Plus every NFL franchise.

We will never, ever win a bidding war.

Our best bet w Fran is that he’s happy enough, competitive enough, compensated well enough, and getting sufficient support from Cuse and the community and Cuse Nation that he would want to stay anyway.

Ok, let's keep moving the goal post. Actually, let me help you out with a few more pivots to your original statement.

If the NY Giants came calling
If the NY Jets came calling
If his wife hated Syracuse
If Fran decided to leave coaching
If the ACC broke up
If Syracuse deemphasized athletics.

Understand?

You literally said there was a buyout big enough if the big boys came calling.

I don't understand what you aren't grasping about myself saying "there is not enough money to stop the big boys from getting what they want". If they want him, they can offer enough money that we cannot compete.

Cheers!

I agree. My point is that SU can pay Fran enough money that it would take a very large contract to lure him away. I'm not sure what that number is but i would think in the 7m a year, multiple year contract Fran would be hard pressed to leave SU. Let's say some school offers him 10m a year. 3 m a year is huge but the difference between 4m and 7m vs 7m and 10m while both a 3m difference is enormous. For most executives' stability for their families matters as much as anything once you have achieved a certain level of wealth. My two cents is that 7m a year, and solid compensation structure for staff, and a decent path to the playoffs keeps Fran around until the NFL comes calling.
I believe Fran is more about family, and building something special in this world.
That's something unusual in the world today.

Let's just say Fran is a bit different then you or other people. You are a cynic in many ways, and that's OK .
But Fran seems to be the kind of man who walks the talk.
As long as the University keeps their side of the bargain, and doesn't short change him , I believe he stays, and retires here.

You're right. People don't understand the obsessive insanity of boosters at some schools. Even Auburn boosters ponied up over $21 million to buy Gus Malzahn out. If a big boy comes calling, and he's interested, he's gone.

Having said that, we have a better chance at keeping him for a while than we would have at keeping any other coach we'd want to keep.

Did you read my other post where I laid out the reasons he might stay? I was strictly replying to kcsu's claims.

We are on the same page. It is important to remember that Fran chose Syracuse. He initiated the conversation. He talks about not being given a chance, talks about other coaches maybe holding him back vs helping him get to the next level. I believe he is talking about Temple passing on him. I believe that he loves being in Syracuse. That the community is like his home. He talks about coach P, George, Darius, and other SU legends and how they have made a difference for him. Fran is never going to find a better University to coach for then Syracuse when it comes to all of the above. Sure, there are other schools that can pay him more than we can. But back to my other post if we pay him enough. Pay him to the point that money really doesn't matter which in today's world is probably around 7m all in. That once he gets to that point of money not mattering, that as long as SU can provide him with a reasonable path to the championship playoffs, he has no reason to leave and wont. Hes young, has young children, and he is on his turf. Hes a local. I think he sticks for a very long time.
