the comments of former players and other ACC coaches, the worse I feel about this firing, and am perplexed about why it had to be done before the final game of the season. SS should have been given another year, especially in view of the fact that his starting QB went down the last two years. I understand that it's a bottom line business, however, there was a lot to be admired about this man.

Of course there is a lot to admire about Shafer, but he was years away from any real success and I believe the ceiling wasn't very high. The timing was fine as he was melting down before our eyes and it was difficult to watch a good guy writhing in the wind. Hopefully, the done will give him the send-off he deserves.

Coaches have zero incentive to say anything but positive things and player support is nothing new.

I agree with you, it's tough to read. Shafer was well liked. He wasn't an arse. But you are an SU fan, not a Scott and Missy Shafer fan. I wish him all the best, maybe he could have caught fire, or maybe his schemes would have led to another 4 beatup QBs. Why does SU have such horrible luck with our QBs? Do we recruit creampuffs to put under C? Or does it have something to do with scheme, maybe Lester's charts never accounted for increased injury chances by running his triple option, maybe something is wrong with our S and C program. Maybe it was coincidence. Point is we don't really know. What we do know is that we've only won 4 road games in the past 3 years, including none this year. Our team gave up over 40+ points in every road contest this year. Shafer hasn't beaten a top 25 team since taking over. Remember those gems against WV and UL on a Friday night? Not in the past 3 years you don't. Our first season under Shafer we weren't bowl eligible until there was about 10 seconds left in the season. If not for a lucky McF'it play, we could potentially be looking at our 3rd straight year with no bowl. We've won exactly 4 games in our last 21. That's right since lucking out against Nova and beating CMU convincingly on the road, the team is 4-21 since. 2 of those wins came against WF, one was an FCS team, the other was a game at home that went to OT against the team that was our biggest win last year. Results matter.

All that being said, I wish Shafer nothing but the best moving forward.

When and where did the injuries happen to SU Qb's? Never mind the Scheme .

College Football firings have to happen early. Before the end of the season. Look at all the openings. SU is already behind 10 other schools now to look for a coach. If anything it should have been done earlier. That is just the nature of the beast of college coaches. Why you see 10 teams a year playing a bowl game with an interim coach. Like Memphis and Temple and others will do.

I'm sure you can find quotes from Boeheim praising guys like Norm Roberts and Keno Davis, and I'm pretty sure Robinson's players rallied around him after his firing.

Exactly! Just as with players, coaching is a relatively tight knit fraternity. Completely expected that they're going to spew pleasantries, etc. and band together providing support.

A. Are you aware of our record in football the past few years?
B. Do you read this board at all as to why the decision was made to announce the decision before the BC game?

Awaiting a reply on both questions.

We should fire the new guy before we even hire him to get ahead of the trend.

I completely agree. You knew if Shafer was gone we'd find out quick once the onslaught of firings started.

Don't appreciate your being so patronizing, and I really don't give a you know what about your opinion of my post.

You are correct you don't have to defend yourself. I don't agree with your opinion, but I do respect it. Don't let this keep you from posting bro!

I made no assertion of what I thought of your post.

I asked 2 questions and if you A. Knew what our record was, you would have a better understanding of why he was fired and B. Reading the board would have answered your questions, all of them.

Shafer was told much earlier that he would not be back, possibly even before the NC State game. It was leaked out that he would not be back and would indeed be fired which forced Coyle to publicly declare the firing when he did. If not for the leak it would have been announced after BC.

I am a pro Shafer guy and have met him and his family several times and I wish he had won more and was still here but given his record, I understand the decision. As you yourself said, this is a bottom line business.

You asked me if I knew what SU's record is this season. If that isn't condescending, I don't know what is. And plenty of people rehash issues that were previously discussed on this forum.

He should not have been fired, good guy or bad guy it takes time to turn programs around, did he make mistakes, yes, did he get the program pointed in the right direction, yes, upgrade in talent, yes. Syracuse will continue to be what it is until there is continuity in the coaching staff.

Didn't he point the program the wrong way first after being a continuity coach?

The "he didn't get enough time" crowd acts like GRob was the coach in 2012, we fired him, and now fired Shafer 3 years later for not fixing GRob's mess quick enough.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect yours, but this line of thinking just boggles my mind. Are you not basically saying we should keep a poor HC on just for continuity? As good of a person Shafer is he just didn't show enough progress on the field. How many opportunities did he have this year? After a poor start to the season he got the fanbase rallying around him after a hard fought LSU game. How do we follow that up? By looking totally unprepared coming out of a bye week and getting smoked by USF. Then the self-inflicted blow of keeping Dungey in the game during a blowout, only to respond that he was going for the comeback win. That just showed a total unawareness of the situation. Which was compounded on the infamous end of half time out, followed by a squib kick x 2.

Shafer had plenty of opportunities to coach his way into an extension. He just didn't capitalize on a single 1. A move needed to be made. Now it's time for everyone to move on.

What turn around?

The team is worse across the board than when he took over.

Agree with this. But, his in game management and calls were just mind boggling, and he never seemed to learn or show improvement in this area. However, like you say, win those two games and coach likely gets extended

i think he improved as being a head coach but when push came to shove he fell back on his defensive first mentality
