The NCAA stuff, perception versus reality

Which is alot of student athletes, how does an Ad or Coach stop a kid from getting high or doing something stupid?

Obviously you can't. That's not what I was suggesting. I was thinking was more like someone responsible for indoctrination and propaganda to get everyone thinking the right way so it doesn't happen in the first place.

They can't stop them from doing something stupid. What they can do is create an environment in which the kids know that doing drugs or "doing something stupid" won't be tolerated. Actually enforce consequences for those types of missteps. I'm not close enough to the program to know for sure, but my perception is that JB doesn't instill a lot of discipline for off the court actions. He relies on others to do it, ie. the school, the NCAA, local law enforcement etc. It is one way of rolling and you could argue its resulted in us having more than our share of drama over the years.

That's my perception and he discussed it in his book also. That's one thing that I really hope Hop has a stricter philosophy on. There is something to be said for letting kids make their own decisions but I could do with less off the court drama.

Regardless of your son, the AD is responsible for all NCAA athletics. The issue is bigger than the basketball coach and staff. Their job is to coach basketball. The AD is responsible for interacting with the NCAA.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. The AD interacts with the compliance officer. I didn't mean to imply that the compliance officer interacts with the NCAA. I meant that compliance was between between the kid, coaches, AD if appropriate and the NCAA (probably a poorly constructed sentence as you suggested.)

You said a compliance officer is <<Someone who makes sure when a drug violations occur the parents get notified according to the compliance rules.>>

All I'm saying, and maybe it's just a minor point, is that the school cannot contact the parents when drug violations occur, plain and simple--HIPAA laws prohibit it.

That may be the case. Someone said NCAA rules require us to notify the parents and that was one of the reasons for the recent sanctions. It was actually the first I heard of this one. But since it was on the Internet it must be true.

Actually, I'm even more confused. This is exactly what I am talking about. Let us hope and pray Mark Wheeler gets the policy straightened out. This is his job. He should be the one that makes this perfectly clear what the policy is and what to do when it has been violated.

Well I was just clarifying the point that you made about NCAA rules requiring we notify parents. They don't. Our policy apparently did and the NCAA says if we have a policy, we have to follow it.

I long for the simpler times in athletic administration, when Jake would just say to ignore a policy while firing up another cigarette.

Sounds like a BOHECA move by the NCAA to say we did not enforce our own policy. What a bunch of a holes.

Me too!

... Or we could have followed our policy, or changed it, or got rid of it entirely. Instead we picked the worst possible option.

The NCAA doesn't have to be the Boogeyman of everything.

Wow, I did not expect you to say the last sentence. You may have Stockholm Syndrome.

Why? When did I ever say the NCAA isn't terrible? But on the drug testing stuff, it was a total unforced error on our part.

I will agree with that way of looking at it. That was four different interpretations of the same post!
