The New Guys: B.J. Johnson

I guess the shot clock was malfunctioning... at first I kept thinking he was nailing treys as the clock was expiring. Impressive none the less and can't wait to see him in Orange!!!
two separate plays.

The thing that drives me insane watching BJ highlights (particularly the one in the OP) is his jump shot. It's like he is moving in slow motion, almost designed like its for an "Intro to jump shooting" instructional tape. His form is pretty much perfect, and so silky smooth, it just feels like it takes forever for him to get his shot off.

Of course it's the same complaint I have with CJ. I feel like it limits his ability to shoot 3s because he needs so much more space to get off his shot because it takes so long to release it.

That said, we as Cuse fans could only so lucky if BJ is able to become the same type of player for us that CJ Fair has become.

Conditioning update. BJ is 181pds after gaining 9pds over the last 2-3 weeks. He lost 8pds just before the playoffs started a 5wks ago due to having the flu causing him to miss 8days of school and one game. The weightlifting and conditioning with the FB team along BB workouts are working as his size is increasing as well as his skillset. I think he may be around 200pds/6'7.5" or taller upon arriving at the CUSE in July. In speaking with Coach AA today, BJ will looked upon to play 2-3 because of his ability to handle the ball and shoot at the 2 and at the 3 he would give you the third ball handler with the ability to score from the outside as well as off the bounce. BJ will get to play with a future teammate in Tyler Roberson in the Capital Classic in DC/VA on 4/27/13. BJ will also play in the MKC in Philly on 6/2/13. SUball

A couple of things - the importance of having a fluid motion is as effective as a lightning quick release. When you watch something on film you can see the shot coming a mile away. When your a defender its not always the same. Scoop seemed like he had the slowest shot ever but still got it off the majority of the time and did so with moderate success for the hitch in his shot he had. Video can make your mind explode sometimes.

Nice! I am really excited to see BJ over the course of his career at SU.

When BJ catches and shoots or off the bounce with lift, extension and follow through, Its a pretty sight to see. He was able to get the shot off against defenders with length and lift making them. It will only increase as he continues to work on his game. For instance, he shot 600shots today after lifting today.

If you are 6-7 1/2 (and growing?) with big hops, does it matter how long it takes to get your jump shot off? What are they going to do about it anyway?

That's what I say. They never know what's coming anyway and by the time they figure it out there team is getting the ball out of the net. Well that's the way I was taught and the way I teach from an offensive standpoint. No one player should ever be able to stop you from putting the ball in the hoop.

I like seeing our recruit's team celebrating a championship with it's fans. it doesn't take much imagination to see something similar happening in the future.

We as ACES NATION really were happy for the team to have won the CHIP. The team really wanted it for the fans as they were not able to bring it home in the last two seasons against Chester. I myself always thought that the ACES were more talented than Chester even last year but they were able to put it all together. BJ was the first player to hit the stands during the celebration on the court. The rest of the team was on the court and he was headed to the stands so I started towards the first row and of course he ran right by me. Go figure.:)

This makes it seem like 1996 was along time ago...
The guy who did this is a chester guy and they probably figured that by using this format with Kobe would take away the fact that BJ outplayed Rondae and sunk their ship. NOT!!! They got what they deserved an "ASS WHOOPING"!!! That's the way I feel about it from my standpoint and History of playing from S. Philly.

oh i agree i was getting at liberos concern about the speed of release and how i don't see any issue - the fluid consistant release , especially at that size gives me zero concern at all

If he shows up around 6'7" and 200 he'll weigh nearly as much as Hakim but a bit shorter, and we all know how that turned out.

I really think BJ will see a lot of time at the 2 for us. Could be a monster at the top of the zone and good luck to any shrimp 2's trying to stop him from getting a shot off. You'd have to put a 3 on him, which means we get a mismatch at the 3 or 4 spot on offense.

I really like where this is headed.

Just imagine if JS could handle the rock like a guard at his size as a freshman. I think that we will all like were the thread and everything will be going at that point.

I don't want to make it sound like a horrid thing. I just wanted to point out it drove me insane. But by the senior season vids, his release is much faster, without losing any of the silky smoothness. I'm sure it won't be an issue, just seems like it takes forever from the moment he starts the motion from his ankles to the time the ball drops cleanly through the net in that first vid.

That said, I hope I get to see it 1000 times over the next 4 years.

He guarded Jefferson at times during these meetings and did well but we usually played zone because Chester was not a good shooting team. The key was to limit them to one shot and run on O with positive results. Interesting they took pride in defending BJ in the previous matchups for the district and state titles when he was guarded by Rondae and the second best defender on their team as BJ did not have good outings against. But according to their coach as BJ was being guarded by Rondae and Kirksley the teams two best defenders in the 4th matchup. Chester's coach stated that "they overlooked BJ in their approach to the game." They couldn't guard him then and now. He could go around them at will and did in the states. I think he just needed to settle down and quietly assassinate them as a whole. Mission Accomplished.

His nickname at SU could be: silent assassin or just assassin

Syracuse has had great luck with PA kids in the past... A la Gerry, and in my day, Billy... Who was one class year behind me, Billy made my senior year really exciting... At least until we were bitten by spiders...:-(
Does BJ have a favorite Cuse player from the past OG?

You know I never really asked him. But I would believe it would probably be Melo, Scoop, Dion in that order.

What type of shooting drills does he do? Does he shoot on the gun or what? Curious for my own good haha.

Certainly would be some sort of NCAA violation, but I think we need OGBJ20 on the staff somehow! :)

As a lurker with no connections but a life-long 'Cuse fan I thank you for posting here. Also, the admins and "good" posters here will have BJ's (and your) back when the idiots inevitably come out of the woodwork to complain about something.

I don't care about what number they give him ... what I care about is how he plays. And from these vids, he's got CJ2 written all over him. Nice stroke, fluid athlete, lanky, comfortable handling in traffic or under pressure, can create or stop/pop and has range.

Might as well start working on his R hand now. lol
