The New York Bulls

New York's flagship athletic department? I assume they left out the "public university" part of that. Because otherwise, holy crap that's comical.

It's a nice thought but I can't see it actually happening. First, there are too many state universities and colleges for anyone to consider Buffalo "theirs". Albany and Stony Brook would go nuts if UB was singled out like that. You think people in Syracuse or Albany will feel the warmth of Buffalo. I went to grad school there. No one in Buffalo cares about UB football or hoops. I will admit, there is potential there due to the size... but I can't see it happening.

Best part of the article:

"The board is chaired by Pete Augustine, president of New Era and a UB graduate.

“The relationships that we’re creating with them, I liken it hopefully as it grows to what UnderArmour in Maryland’s doing and Nike in Oregon,” White said. “But we have one of the most powerful sports firms in the world right here in Buffalo and the president is a grad."

The Nike Co-founder and Under Armour Founder are slightly different than the President of New Era. Maybe they can get a special hat to where on the sidelines each game.

New Era is definitely not as big as Nike or Under Armour, but it is doing very well. Also, it's a private company, so who knows what type of salary the founder gets.

I think the founder is dead and the CEO is a descendant. The UB guy is president. He probably makes great money but comparing to Phil Knight would be ... I can't even come up with the right word.

The point I was trying to make is that he's just the President of New Era, not a founder and not even the CEO. He's not always guaranteed to be there. Having the founder of a company like Nike or Under Armour as a graduate is a little different. They'll go through structural changes, but they'll always be involved in the company unless they were to sell all of their shares.

Overall, Stony Brook's athletic department is better than UB's. So they can't even claim to have the best AD amongst the SUNY's, let alone the state.

The first weekend of the college football season I was listening to WFAN and heard a 60 second ad for this "New York Bulls" thing. As an SU guy and college sports fan I got what they were trying to accomplish, but it must've sounded equal parts incomprehensible and ridiculous to the typical NYC fan listening in.

I mean, UB can spend their money anyway they want, but this seems to be about 25 years too late.

If they marketed themselves as Canada's Bulls and started a D1 hockey program, it would work so much better.

NYC to Boston - 4 hrs, 10 minutes

NYC to Baltimore - 3 hrs, 28 minutes

NYC to Philadelphia - 2 hrs, 1 minute

NYC to Syracuse - 4 hrs, 32 minutes

NYC to Buffalo - 6 hrs, 58 minutes

Yeah good luck with that.
