I’ve always been an NFL free agent. I don’t identify with new York City or Buffalo. I identify with Syracuse NY, which does not have an NFL team. I follow former Syracuse University players in their pro careers and sometimes, if the circumstances are right, (a star, face of the franchise type player on a Super Bowl contender), I might find myself rooting for that team to win, not just for the player to do well. Then I might continue rooting for that team even after they no longer have that player as long as they are still winning and thus fun to root for.

The Bills have had a dearth of Syracuse players over the years, (a missed opportunity to create some fans, it seems to me). So have the Jets. The Giants have had some SU guys but I spent so much of my youth rooting against them because I was a Jim Brown and thus the Browns fan I have never warmed to them. Actually, I think I’ll list the SU players that have played for the three New York teams since 1960, (I first followed pro football in 1961), before I get into my main subject here. This is from the SU media guide, pages 183-188.

Bills- Art Baker, Al Bemiller, David Byrd, Jim Cheyunski, Joe Donnelly, Deval Glover, Gene Grabosky, Bill Hurley, George Jakowenko, Keith Moody, Mike Shafer, Shamarko Thomas, Julian Wigham, Mike Williams, Blaise Winter, Glenn Young (16)
(Ernie Davis was drafted by the Bills: if he had signed with them and not gotten sick, I’d probably be a Bills fan)

Giants- Will Allen, Jay Bromley, Keith Bullock, Jamie Covington, Larry Csonka, Roger Davis, Riley Dixon, Amba Etta-Tawo, Greg Hanoian, Quentin Harris, Kyle Johnson, Scott Kiernan, Dick Lasse, Olindo Mare, Jameel McClain, Joe Morris, Ryan Nassib, Sean O’Connor, Justin Pugh, George Rooks, Rich Scanlon, Kelvin Smith, Matt Tarullo, David Tyree, Pat Woodcock (25)

Jets- Nick Bruckner, Rob Carpenter, Steve Chomyszak, Durell Eskridge, Brisley Estime, Paul Frase, Sean Hickey, Will Hunter, Dave Jacobs, Jim Jerome, Pat Kelly, Joe Kowaleski, Keon Lyn, Jerry Mackey, Art Monk, Rob Moore, Tim Moresco, Jim Nance, Jeff Pilon, Shamarko Thomas, Jarrod West, Terrance Wisdom (22)

That isn’t much to hitch your dreams to. Some of those names were legitimate great players, (Csonka, Monk, Nance), hanging on to their career well after their primes with teams they aren’t normally associated with. Joe Morris had some great years with the Giants but his career was cut off in his prime by injury. I was happy for Joe when his Giants won the Super Bowl but I was rooting for the Broncos, whom I had followed since the Floyd Little days. I also had an aversion to rooting for the new York teams because growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, not only were the Giants the brown’s chief rival but for years from the late 60s, the new York teams mostly stunk yet they were on TV all the time. it wasn’t like now with ESPN and NFL red zone. You got a double header on Sunday and the first game would be the Giants on CBS and the Bills on NBC, even if they and the team they were playing was out of contention and there were more interesting games elsewhere, including teams I was actually rooting for. That always made me resent the New York franchises a little.

These days I’m just sort of neutral toward the Bills, the Giants and the Jets. None of them made the playoffs this year and all three seem to have major rebuilding projects ahead. I wondered how many times all three teams had missed the playoffs. Then I wondered how many times all three had made the playoffs. then I wondered what was their best combined year. And their worst combined year. I realize that Bills fans are not fans of the Giants or the Jets, that Giants fans don’t care about the AFC until the Super Bowl and that Jets fans have their own problems to worry about. But I still wondered how the state had fared over the years so for a little while, I got interested in all three teams. I simply recorded their overall record, (regular season + post season, no exhibition games) and then added them up.

The Bills have had 22 winning seasons, 32 losing seasons and 5 even seasons. They have played in the post season 18 times. They’ve won or shared their division title 8 times and won 2 AFL and 4 AFC championships. They have had the best record in the state 21 times.

The Giants have had 25 winning seasons, 25 losing seasons and 9 even seasons. They have played in the post season 20 times. They’ve won or shared their division title 11 times and won 5 NFC championships and 4 Super Bowls. They have had the best record in the state 22 times.

The Jets have had 19 winning seasons, 29 losing seasons and 11 even seasons. They have played in the post season 18 times. They’ve won or shared their division title 3 times and won 1 AFL championship and 1 Super Bowl. They have had the best record in the state 19 times.

Combined, the three teams have had 22 winning seasons, 36 losing season and 1 even season. They have played in the post season a combined 56 times. They have won or shared division titles 22 times. and won 2 AFL, 10 conference championships and 5 Super Bowls.

I think everyone can guess the best combined year. The worst was 1976: 8-34-0. I can still smell that year. Those crummy teams were on TV all the time!

There was one year when all three teams were in the playoffs: 1981. There have been 14 years when none of them were, 29 years when one of them was and 10 years when two of them were in. New York teams have met in the playoffs twice: The Bills beat the Jets 27-21 in the 1981 AFC Wildcard game and the Giants beat the Bills 20-18 in Super Bowl 25.

I’ll leave it to the true Bills, Giants and Jets fans to come up with their all-time teams, (Giants since 1960), and describe how a round-robin between them would have gone.

As a Southern Tier boy, Bills fan, Cuse fan - how the hell did I never know that the Buffalo drafted Ernie Davis in the AFL draft?

I’ll have to do some research on if Ernie even considered signing with the Bills. Very interesting subject.

Update: apparently Buffalo offered more money but he still signed w Cleveland. In typical Bills fan fashion, Davis was booed at a subsequent college all star game, held in Buffalo, that July! Hahaha

P.S. The Bills are the only true NY team
