I know JB likes to say our offense has been good because JB sez stuff, but it hasn’t been. We’ve struggled to get the ball up and into any set without time pressure. There was a possession early where Joe nearly got a 10 second call on offense, then went laterally for 18 seconds before jacking a desperation shot. No one moves or cuts or sets any sort of quality screen. The offense is a mess and throwing a few shots in the hoop doesn’t change that.

What was shocking to me was that we’re actually top 20 in adjusted offense!

Our adjusted defense ranking was….less shocking.

We had a very bad day shooting today but the offense was 2nd in the ACC before today and nationally we fare very well in offensive metrics.

It's been this way for a long time.

We run really lazy offense.

A very bad day makes it seem we had a bad day by chance. That wasn’t the case. We were out-talented and out-coached and out-executed.

It’s fine, it’s Duke. We just have to realize where we are in the pecking order.

Buddy was one on one’d and couldn’t do anything. They were going over screens and he is so limited in his arsenal he couldn’t make them pay for that bc he was looking for the three so hard or if he did “attack” off the dribble he doesn’t have the instincts to be the hockey assist guy.

Is what it is. Burn the tape, beat Pitt.

Yes it is what it is. We were #2 in the ACC in scoring and our national metrics are good. I think someone said above we were 20th in offenseive efficiency. We had a bad day shooting.

Duke, in conference play, was #1 in conference in overall FG% D and 3pt % D.

It wasn’t an accident.

Our bad day was due to better scheme, talent and execution by our opponent.

We are second in ACC offense in terms of points scored average, correct? Isn’t that correlated to how awful we are defensively, giving other teams high efficiency against us, leading to more total possessions by both teams? Almost like the old Loyola Marymount effect?

A lot of us said, over the summer, that we were going to have four really good shooters on the floor at all times, but not enough athleticism or playmaking for them to get good shots. That’s exactly what we are seeing. Meanwhile, the zone is so feeble, it takes only two or three passes and some schmuck can simply catch and launch a wide open three against us.

Stats are often misleading.

This is the most one-dimensional offense that JB has featured at any point throughout his career.

The limitations are more ironic given the players that JB ran off from last year's squad, who would have greatly improved this team's chances of performing better.

At this point, it is what it is.

I didn’t say it was an accident. Of course Duke had a lot to do with it. But we had plenty of open 3 looks too. And you’ve twisted it to be about today when my response to another post was about our offense for the season.

This team cuts slow, uses screens slow, run the court slow and closes out slowly. Watch how slow Buddy moves to get open. At least Joe moves. This team plays half speed most of the time.

It certainly seems like half speed, because they're way less athletic than most of the opponents they face.

But you're bringing the perspective of a coach, and I think most of the fan base here only watches SU games, and aren't acknowledging the slippage.

We don’t have the players. Period.

Boeheim has said over the years it’s about the players. Right now, we don’t have enough good ones plus, he’s lost the plot with the ones he has that are related to him.

We have flaws but we’re still 17 in KenPom offensive efficiency. That’s very good. We got some good looks yesterday but couldn’t knock them down. Offense isn’t the real problem, though it could be even better with improved movement and spacing, like you said. The really issue is what Gottlieb said—the same players who make our offense good make our defense horrendous.

Yeah I agree. But the offensive efficiency numbers lie or don’t tell the whole truth. There’s nothing too good about the offense other than Jesse

We were also 2nd in the ACC in scoring before yesterday. We’re now 4th.

There is another potential dimension for this offense, but getting the ball to Jesse apparently isn't part of the game plan. Seems elementary my dear Watson.
Totally agree, thus our 9-10 record. If we are hitting our 3's we win about half the games. If we don't we lose about half our games. We are one dimensional. And with no athletes we can't press when behind.

I wish you showed some of this positivity in Yankee threads.
