If you're going to win you're going to need three and outs so you're talking about thirty yards of field position It's not like the defense had the luxury of giving up a 7 play 40 yard drive after a touchback

Yes, but also the 3 recent onside kicks have not been kicked to give us any chance to recover, the kicker nudges the ball in the hopes that they don't realize we are onside kicking and we can race up and recover. They need to kick it so there is a couple of short bounces then a high bounce before it gets to the guys trying to catch the ball, then you have a chance with it being a free ball in the open air. You would hope they have practiced this (the kickers especially), but with the three recent attempts it doesn't look like it. Not surprising we appear to be unprepared far to often.

I don't understand why they don't just pop it over the front guys and have the ball bounce free. God knows SU struggles with that so why not do it vs other teams? Also, how about a hard line drive at one of the front guys? I'm just not into the one dimensional thinking of onside kicks.

We had just scored a TD to pull within 2 possessions, and I think the idea was to try to swing the momentum maybe catch ND when they weren't expecting it. My only complaint is that it was poor execution - it wasn't even close to working.

BTW, how can it be "too early" and "too predictable" at the same time? Couldn't the same could be said about the fake punt?
