The 'Orange' returns to the Hill...

I worked up there forever so I can clarify all the bars that were there.

Faegan's was a poster shop called The Emporium.

On the corner was the Mason Jar, which became Bragg's, Then the Orange Cafe, then Darwin's.

Harry's was originally called The Greenhouse Cafe.

Maggie's was originally upstairs in the mall and it was really named Magnolia's Courtyard. It was nicknamed Maggie's. Then it moved downstairs in the mall but only had an entrance from the street. That spot was originally P.O.E.T.S. which could be entered from the mall. Then Maggie's moved to Marshall Street but could be entered from the Chuck's alleyway as well. That spot is now DJ's On the Hill...

Chuck's is now where Sutter's Mill used to be. Originally It was underneath that and was really called Hungry Charlies but only nicknamed Chuck's.

44's was on Marshall Street in a spot that was first called The Generic Bar or The G-Bar so named because they never put their actual name up on the building which I think was The Marshall Street Pub. Eventually, that spot became Konrad's until they were shut down by authorities for serving minors.

The new bar, which will be called The Orange was originally named The Orange and was the only bar up there for years. It then became Buggsy's Back Alley Bar, then the Olive & the Orange (or O&O), then Lucy's and now The Orange again. And yes, Buggsy's was spelled with 2 G's...

And don't forget the Jabberwocky in Marion - owned by S.U.

Man, we need a timeline for this stuff. Locations of Maggie's from 1999 to 2004 needs its own chapter.

When I arrived in 1991, this was the lineup (any upperclassmen or women who had real IDs or better IDs can chime in)

Sutters (RIP, thanks Mike Edwards)
Chucks (Under Sutters. The current location is, I believe, where Sutters once was)
44s (the once proud Marshall St tradition)
Faegan's (same place of course)
Harry's (same place of course)
Maggie's (RIP, on University Ave next to the other Bookstore, then moved around the corner in the 00s)
Olive and the Orange (became Lucy's)
Orange Cafe (became Darwins in 1994ish, don't know what it is now)

The Sheraton bar, once called Regatta, became more popular by my senior year. A $1 all you can eat buffet for a bunch of poor college students will do that.

Did I miss any?

This is the line-up that I remember as well.

My buddies were the bouncers at Sutter's Mill back then...LOL Mike Edwards.

Maggie's had I think it was $2 or $3 pitchers. They actually had real glass Coors Light mugs that you could keep. Some fights they were broken over some heads and then they went to plastic...Great times!

I remember a 'fat Tuesday' buffet at Sutters. It was something like $5, all you could eat. Decent spread if memory serves.

Thanks for the recap! I arrived fall 90 and graduated 94, and all I can remember now was faegans, 44s, & Chucks. And what was the bar above the CVS? Down from McDs? On same side of street? These are the bars I most frequented during my time on the hill.

That was Orange Cafe in your early college years, might have been Darwin's by the time you left. Can't remember when exactly it flipped. Not sure what it is now.

It's not an on campus spot, but I remember 95X Night at Uncle Sam's.

$3 cover charge, and 25 cent mixed drinks.

Back when I was an idiot, I don't know how I drove home from that place. It was so packed, when you went to the bar, you got drinks 4 at a time.

Hungry Charlies was my favorite bar. Remember many Rugby parties there in 1974 and 1975.
Saw the toasters there in 93 or 94. Sweatiest best show ever. And I don't even like ska.

The new place has NOT opened yet but it's close. And Darwin's is nothing now... I realize that not everyone was a fan of Lucy's, but it had a niche and it was a very unique place. People that didn't like it never gave it a chance..

If only 44's was back. Ive long contemplated opening 44's again myself.. then coming to the realization that i have no money.
Probably all spent at 44s!

Ha. Before your time but I worked at Sam's the summers of 76, 77 and 78 along with some college breaks. Best job ever. Especially the after hours parties.

What was the basement bar on the corner next to faegans underneath the pizza place? Always packed when I was there...when a fight broke out it was frightening. Huge bball hangout

Hey...one of my roomates was on the Rugby team in 74-75 and I went to Hungry Charlie's for the Rugby team parties also.

As CTO, Alibrat and others of a certain age will attest to, TC's was the best SU bar EVER.

I was a regular at BOTH The Orange and TCs!!!
