Just came across this -sorry if it had already been posted.

Amazing how many journalists want to die on this hill.

Two dozen players got covid anyway. I heard a stat that BC ran 6,000 tests and had one positive case. Not sure if true but anywhere close to that would be amazing. SU's experience also far better than UConn.

Not to mention that UConn's conference status would have meant a budget filled with red ink if they had played this year. Yet somehow they're heroic because they're not in it for the money grab. lol

EDIT: link is broken, will try to find another.

If two dozen UConn players got COVID, it's because they didn't have to live in a bubble all season.

The reason BC didn't go to be a bowl game is because they hadn't had contact with the outside world for four months, and no one could stand it any more.

But the vast majority of players across the country wanted to play and those that didn't could opt out. But the bigger point is that these kids are just as likely to get the virus by not playing as they are by playing. And the money grabbing sanctimonious nonsense isn't fooling anybody.

UConn cancelled because they were an independent and couldn’t get games easily.
Plain and simple.
If they were in a football conference they play football this year.
Dino Babers coached Syracuse the entire season without one player testing positive during the season.

He did a better job than UConn.
NY Times is bringing its politics into this debate where it shouldn’t be.

UConn chose to not play football in 2020 because they couldn’t afford to, and because there was almost no negative impact to the program shutting down for a year. They were already the worst program in the country by a large margin. Things couldn’t really get any worse. Why not not play and only lose 5 million instead of trying to play and losing 10 million?

There was absolutely nothing altruistic in their decision. They had no choice. No fans. No revenue coming in. No league members to help bail them out. This and the decision to deemphasize football to try and save their troubled basketball programs were the only good decisions the UConn athletic department has made in the past 10 years.

The NY Times has reached a new low. How sad.

NYT is trash

So I can't read the article, but is the jist that UConn should be commended for not playing because they wouldn't succumb to a money grab? Since it was UConn, wasn't it pretty much a money grab for them to not play?

Yes that pretty much sums it up.

Btw Streeter of the NYT is far from alone. Christine Brennan of USA Today has been on a jihad about this from the jump. Others as well.

Good luck to them.

There was a point to be made about the greed and hypocrisy involved with the just-completed football season, but exalting the UConn program was hardly the way to make the case. Their decision to sit out the season was made primarily for fiscal, not altruistic, reasons. The proof (and hypocrisy) is clearly shown by the fact that the Huskies men's and women's hoops programs are not sitting out the season despite the acceleration of the pandemic.

The real champions are every CFB fan, coach, and player. We knew the risks, accepted the challenged, complied with draconian measures, and we're rewarded with a season. The season was bad as far as in-person fandom went, but a major success when compared to the spring sports.

As the Marines say, we adapter and overcame the obstacles.

It beat watching old TV re-runs...again!
