I'd like to get input from the board to settle a friendly disagreement that GoSU96 an I had in another thread about the nature of Mark Coyle's and prospective head coaching candidate Chris Ash's potential overlap at Drake University, where they both attended as undergraduates and played football.

Here are the relevant facts:
  • Mark Coyle played at Drake from 1987-1991
  • Chris Ash played at Drake from 1992-1996
  • During Ash's first year, Coyle attended Drake in 1992 to get his master's degree, and was on campus that year
Based upon this information, did their tenure on the Drake football team miss overlapping by:

[1] 1 year, since Ash began playing the year after Coyle graduated

[2] 5 years, since Ash graduated 5 years after Coyle graduated

I'm just curious to hear how others on this board will react to this complex Rubik's cube of a mathematical puzzle. I'll hang up and listen to the responses.

Their tenure didn't miss overlapping. They were both enrolled in 92. If you are talking strictly undergrad, they missed each other by 1 year.

If Coyle RECEIVED his master's degree in 1992, and if Ash started at Drake in 1992, they WERE NOT there at all at the same time. Coyle would have graduated in May of 1992, and Ash would have come in sometime around August of 1992. That is the most likely scenario. I could get into what ifs, but this is how it works 90% of the time.

Correct. So how far about were they--1 year or 5?

Or in other words, 1 year and three months from when Coyle stopped playing there and Ash started playing there. Right?

Yes and 3 months removed from being on campus at the same time.

If you want specifically when one stopped playing and the other started? Then figure December 1990 is when Coyle stopped playing (as that is when the season would have ended his senior year...grad school having nothing to do with playing time) and let's say Ash came in the summer to start for the fall 1992 season, let's say August as that is usual. Then from December 1990 until August 1992 is 1 year and 8 months...!!!!

Okay, fair enough [even though most people graduate in the spring]. So, is 1 year 8 months--taking the maximum view of the example you provided--closer to 1 year, or 5 years?

Did they know each other?

Either way, if Ash turns out to be the guy, I figured Coyle would hire someone he knew directly or indirectly...and that guy would be a coordinator.

Let's see.

Ash is putting a new meaning to alumni networking
