The season starts now...

Yeah. Look at our schedule. At 5-7 he is not on the hot seat, anything else he could be...
Just to be clear, I don't think he would ever get fired at the end of this year regardless of what happens. But these last four games are so incredibly important for everything Coach Shafer is trying to build here.

This is a hugely important stretch of games in his coaching career. Win out, and boy you'd be carrying a lot of momentum into next season. Go 1-3 or 0-4 (and I am on the record as saying I don't think there's any chance that happens) and perception will be... well, I don't want to think about it.

The main point of the post was these next four games ARE the season. They are hugely important, and SU really can't afford a bad showing down the stretch.

Agree.

We really need those extra bowl practices.

The Shafer coaching for his career thing is ridiculous. 1.5 years is nuts. Lots of coaches at bigger or equal schools have gotten way more time recently. Mullen, muschamp, edsall, pellini, London, Fedora, hoke, golden, crips even flood is in year 3... These are just guys off the top of my head. Shafer gets min 3 years probably 4, and likely 5 as he should.

My only question for Lester is why the hell after halftime and you have a 6-3 lead are we throwing on first down. Run the ball, get the clock moving...try to get in 2nd and 3rd and short and shorten the game as much as possible. Keep Long in 2nd and short or 3rd and short and manageable situations.

I know the lead wasn't huge and only a FG, but with the way their offense was playing and SU's defense was playing, keep that clock moving, limit the possessions and snaps Clemson has on offense put your QB in manageable situations. Cause when you are throwing on 1st down and its an incomplete pass you now have 2nd and long, you now have stopped the clock, and now have put Long in a tough spot to try and lead a first down drive.

It was unbelievable to me how Lester was calling plays coming out of halftime

Agreed. Probably the only time I've agreed with you. But why we were throwing on first down (especially in the second half ) was nuts, bit mind boggling

I will be very disappointed if we finish anything worse then 3-1.

NCST is terrible. No excuse for not winning that at home.
Duke is vastly over rated. No excuse for not winning that at home.
Pitt and BC are crap shoots, kind of like us, you never know what side of the ball will or will not show up. Therefore a split is likely.

And Shafer isn't going anywhere.

In order of likelihood for us winning, from highest to lowest:

NC State
Pitt
BC
Duke

I'd actually go

NC State
Duke
BC
Pitt

I'm sure they are all counting us as a win as well. Really wouldn't be surprised if we go 0-4 or 4-0

I say NC State, Pitt, BC, Duke NC State can't stop the run and we can run the ball. Just can't let Brissett go off at all. Pitt is in free fall. BC is scrappy as hell even if they have a bowl clinched they will come after us hard just like last year. Duke is better than people think and theu have a dual threat QB(as does BC). I hope and pray we find 3 wins but not sure we do.

Duke's easily the best team left, but they're not unbeatable. NC State is crucial.

0-4 would be a surprise ,could go 1-3 or 4-0 with 2-2 or 3-1 being most likely

it's in order of difficulty 1 B.C. 2. Duke 3. N.C. State 4. Pitt

no complete teams left on the schedule all have flaws so we could win any or all or none of the games

Just the reality my man. This year has sucked so much it is terrible and embarrising.

3-8 is awful. That being said, I will root for them every week.

It just was never good was it? The Villanova game deflated expectations, and it just never really got better. I'm beyond being disappointed. Now I'm just numb to it. I just sat here and chuckled and rolled my eyes at the majority of the coaching decisions today.

The injuries hurt, but we can all hopefully separate injuries from really, really strange decisions consistently from the coaching staff all year long. This is not the coaching staff that will bring this program back to prominence. God, I hope someone brings this thread back to the top when we are 9-3, and we're all lauding Shafer for what he has done. Given the coaching gaffes this year, I just don't see how that's possible. To be fair, if they're 7-5 someone should bring this back up. I just don't think they will get to that level. Too much decision making that is steeped in a philosophy that just simply does not work in college football without absolute top notch talent.
