The season starts this Saturday

I'm really jealous. I'm almost always optimistic as well. This pre-season I'm at my most pessimistic since 2008. I hope like hell I'm very wrong, and I'd be thrilled to eat copious amounts of crow.

You are more pessimistic than last pre season?

We have better options at QB, RB, and OL. Our OC had a full year to work with the kids. We have a new OL coach.

Our D while still young has plenty of PT under its belt and is in year 2 of a new DC. We return our Top 5 tacklers from last season. Going into last season we only returned 1 of our Top 5.

Given all that was going on in the world, I didn't really care much at all about the program pre-season last year.

Sadly, I didn't care all that much during the season either.

I'm at the same place. Didn't care if there was a season last year. Happy they were able to do it. Complete mulligan to the team, coaches, everything.

This year I'm back to being irritated by the fact Dino let the season post Bowl be a complete let down. Great coaches find new ways to challenge teams after success. That game vs Maryland really opened my eyes to the fact that Dino may be able to motivate up in big games but the ones where you need to create motivation we were completely flat footed.

I need to see ALOT in this Ohio game to get me to buy in to a successful season. I haven't seen Dino outcoach anyone yet. I've seen him get the guys to believe in themselves in big games but we haven't outschemed really anyone. This job is a hard one. I don't think Dino is a bad guy but we need to find out soon if he's the guy to really make chicken salad in Syracuse.

Ohio will tell me how prepared we are. Rutgers will tell me if we're a bowl team

Why do people continue to schedule weddings on Saturdays in the fall?!

I have to admit that we will be holding a celebration of the life of my late wife this Saturday. She passed last September following a lengthy battle with cancer and we waited to hold the memorial that could not happen during the depths of the pandemic.

It is merely a coincidence that the memorial ends at 5 and the game starts at 5 but my beloved Judy would approve.

That's awesome Dick. Hopefully the game provides some well needed happiness.

Who does this in the fall?? (I kid).

May peace be with you and your family on Saturday. Hope the Orange give you all a win to wrap up a tough day.

I am so sorry, my condolences.

Certainly an event I would not scoff at, even if the times didn’t line up as they did

You're a welcome voice of reason on this board and all of its predecessors over the years. We've never met, but my most sincere condolences to you, fine sir.

I have a confession to make. I am always irrationally optimistic this time of year. I never post in the prediction threads because I feel I would jinx us by posting anything other than a 12-0 record. Truth be told, there is always a small part of me deep down inside that always thinks "yeah...it could happen." It almost never does but perhaps this year...yeah, hop on that optimism train.

It is kind of like being a kid on Christmas Eve. Sure, you might find that Santa has only brought you a bunch of socks but then again there could be a shiny new bike. Or a Ferrari. Or a New Year's Day Bowl. You just never know.

Time to put last year and the 4 out of 5 losing seasons behind us. Covid? Every team that beat us last year had to worry about Covid too. With luck, that won't even be an issue this year. New coordinators? That shouldn't even be in the discussion. Injuries? Well, those can happen to anybody and with Dino backfilling the 2-deep a bit, we won't have the depth of a MAC team like last year. We should be in a better position to deal with the inevitable injuries.

My head says SU over Ohio 27-17 but my optimistic heart says "Dino and the guys are going to take out a lot of frustration on Saturday and it will be a blowout of massive proportions." Let's get that season underway. The autumn equivalent of Christmas morning is upon us.
Agree, I don’t see the point of all the negativity before the season. There are reasons for optimism, I would rather dwell on that.

My wife's cousin did the honorable thing and scheduled their fall wedding for a Friday night... OF THE CLEMSON GAME. Just kill me right now.
I feel you, missed the SU win over the Gators in the dome on that one. Thinking of forgiving my friend some day.

12-0 Anything else is blasphemy. It's stupid, but I'm a fan.

Santa brings you Ferrari's? I'm definitely doing it wrong....

We should beat Ohio and Albany. We should lose to Clemson. That leaves us with 9 games of various forms of toss ups with 5 of those being at home. There really is no excuse for going worse than 4-5 in those 9 games. So 6-6 is my expected outcome this year. I think that is realistic. Anything less than 5-7 and I don't see how Dino deserves to stay.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Dick. I'm glad your wife is at peace now.

If you don't mind me asking, where was this picture taken? It looks familiar but I can't put my finger on it.

Thanks Eric. It was taken in Dayton a few years ago at the NCAA Regionals. The Alumni Association had a pregame pep rally at a brew pub with the pep band, the cheerleaders, Otto, etc.
