We are rolling along undefeated, wondering when it will end. Not today.

I thought I’d look at when and against who it ended in past seasons in the Boeheim Era. I’m going to look at season opening winning streaks and any streaks after that that lasted at least 10 games. I want to know: who have been the spoilers? I think we are about to play the main one.

1976-77
Jim won his first game over Harvard, 75-48, then lost to West Virginia 78-83. Yes, he was once 1-1. Later in the season we had an 11 game winning streak that was stopped by St. Bonaventure, 84-91.

1977-78
We again lost our second game of the season at Dayton, 67-76. We then won 11 in a row before losing to Pittsburgh 81-86.

1978-79
We won our first six, then lost to Illinois 61-64 in the Kentucky Invitational, (we lost to the host team the next night, 87-94). We didn’t lose for the rest of the regular season, (this was before the Big East, when our entire regular season schedule was about like November and December now), ripping off 19 in a row until losing to Georgetown 58-66 in the ECAC playoffs, (anyone remember Jeff Bullis?)

1979-80
We ripped off 14 in a row to start the season, then lost 67-68 at Old Dominion on a follow shot that tapes showed was actually after time had run out.

1980-81
Maryland beat us in the first Carrier Classic final to be played in the Dome, 73-83.

1981-82
St. Joseph made us 0-2 in CC Dome finals with a buzzer shot win, 57-59

1982-83
We opened with 11 wins in a row before getting crushed by MJ’s UNC team in Chapel Hill 64-87.

1983-84
Ditto except it was in the Dome and we were only 4-0. Yes, the score was the same.

1984-85
We won 8 in a row to open the seasons but then lost to Villanova 70-82.

1985-86
We won our first 13 by an average of 26 points. Who could stop us? Georgetown 70-73.

1986-87
This time it was 15-0 by an average of 17. We lost at Michigan 88-91.

1987-88
North Carolina beat us 83-86 in overtime in the Tip-off Classic, (thanks to a slow finger on the buzzer). We later won 10 in a row but lost to Villanova 78-80.

1988-89
We seemed invincible winning 13 in a row by an average of 25 points. We hit the century mark eight times in those 13 games, including a glorious 102-78 blow-out over Indiana in the first ever pre-season NIT. Then we lost to Pittsburgh 76-81, the first of four losses in five games.

1989-90
We were the #1 team in the nation to start the season and won 10 in a row before going down hard at home vs. Villanova 74-93. Back to reality.

1990-91
Another 13 game opening winning streak. Another home loss to Villanova, 66-76. God, how I used to hate Rollie Massimino.

1991-92
We started 10-0 again before losing at Pittsburgh 74-83. We were only 12-10 from that point on.

1992-93
We won 8 in a row before losing to Boston College 93-94 in OT in the Dome.

1993-94
The Eagles got us again in the 5th game of the season, 58-75 in the Dome.

1994-95
In the actual last men’s game in Manley we lost 104-111 in OT to George Washington, despite Michael Lloyd’s heroics. We then ripped off 14 wins in a row before losing at Connecticut, 75-86. That started a disappointing 6-9 stretch to end the season.

1995-96
We opened with 11 wins in a row before getting crushed by the Marcus Canby UMASS team, 47-65 in the finals of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, the only game we’ve ever lost in Hawaii. But the Minutemen watched us play Kentucky for the tile after they lost to them in the semi-finals.

1996-97
Kentucky blew us out in Alaska 53-87 in the second game of the season, the first of 13 losses.

1997-98
We won 11 in a row and then got steam-rolled by Michigan 61-93 in Puerto Rico. 15-9 from that point on.

1998-99
We came back from Maui having won 6 in a row and then lost to Ohio U in the semi-finals of the Carrier Classic. 15-12 from that point on.

1999-2000
Our best start yet, 19-0, ended by Seton Hall in the Dome 67-69. 7-6 from that point on.

2000-01
A 9-0 start ended by Tennessee in the Dome 70-83.

2001-02
Another 9-0 start ended by JB’s prostate. We lost 68-82 to NC State and 80-96 to Georgia tech without Fearless leader. He came back and we won another 7 in a row before collapsing to a 7-11 finish.

2002-03
We lost the opener to Memphis in New York, 63-70. What’s up with this team? 11 wins in a row before a loss at Pittsburgh, 60-73. But we ended this season with a sweet little 6 game winning streak.

2003-04
And it stayed at 6 as we lost the opener in the Dome to Charlotte, 92-96. Then came 13 wins in a row until Seton Hall beat us 67-74 in their place.

2004-05
We started out with 7 wins in a row before losing to Oklahoma State in New York, 60-74. But that didn’t start a slump. We won another 13 in a row before losing at Pittsburgh 69-76, the beginning of a 7-7 finish.

2005-06
It was over quickly this year as Florida beat us 70-75 in game #4 in New York. Then we lost to Bucknell before winning 12 in a row. Connecticut put an end to that, in the Dome 80-88. That started a 8-10 slide to end the season, including GMAC’s run in New York.

2006-07
We won 7 in a row before losing to Wichita State 61-64.

2007-08
Ohio State beat us 65-79 in game three in New York. I thought we owned the Garden?

2008-09
The beginning of our incredible stretch of non-conference wins. We are 76-2 over the last six seasons in non-conference regular season games, including a 52 game winning streak. But one of the two was that Cleveland State loss, 69-72 on that 70 footer in game 10 of this season.

2009-10
A 14-0 start was ended by Pittsburgh in the Dome 72-82. Then we won 11 more in a row before Kyle Curic beat us at Louisville, 60-66.

2010-11
We won 18 in a row and were losing for 19-0 when we went to Pittsburgh. We got it, falling down 0-19
before rallying for 17 in a row of our own but coming up short in the end, 66-74, the first of four straight losses. Fire Bowheem!

2011-12
Our best numerical record ever, 34-3 featured our best start ever, 20-0. Then came the problems with Fab Melo and a 58-67 loss at Notre Dame. But we won another 11 in a row after that to go to an incredible 31-1 before getting knocked off by Cincinnati in the BET, 68-71.

2012-13
We finally get beat by a non-conference opponent, Temple, 79-83, again in New York, after 52 wins in a row, 10 to start this season.

2013-14
We are 16-0 and invincable!

Yes, Pitt has been the spoiler no less than 7 times over the years, more than any other team.

It’s out there….

2 things that stick out to me.

1993-94
The Eagles got us again in the 5th game of the season, 58-75 in the Dome.

Why were we playing a conference game in the 5th game of the season?

30-1 heading into the BET. Wrap your head around that. And the one we lost was without Fab. Only game we lost all season with Fab was that Cincy game in the BET. Yet I have seen plenty of other posts on this board where people give us no chance against UK that year with Fab. I say with Fab, we beat UK half the time

Agreed, I think that team was better than the AO team as well. Both awesome teams but I give the Fab team the edge. I think part of the reason the latter team doesn't get the credit is people don't want to believe was that important to the team. All season when we were dominating I was saying he was our most important player on the team, I truly think that holds true.

Why were we playing a conference game in the 5th game of the season?

The Big East had recently expanded and was struggling with how to work the schedule so they had teams playing conference games early in the season.

The real Golden Era of the Big East was when it had 9 teams and they played each other home and home every year. Simple and great.

1994-95

It had completely flown out of my mind that we played in Manley after we moved into the Dome.

So this looks like confirmation that JT was a damned liar when he pronounced Manley "officially closed!"

I hate the first game of the year against Pitt, it has always been a nasty slugfest - always seemed like a real wake up that Big East play was truly about to begin.

What makes it even worse to me is their inability to cash in at tournament time. Only the USPS has worse delivery at that time of year.

1979-80
We ripped off 14 in a row to start the season, then lost 67-68 at Old Dominion on a follow shot that tapes showed was actually after time had run out.

This was very very very painful. Louie-Bouie Senior year, we finally hit the big time. Beat Joe Barry Carroll on National TV (when National TV meant something). That year was the most painful great year we had.

EDIT: Continuing down the list , what a depressing post! Next up was the St Joes loss in 82. I had to get kleenex to continue. Its like reliving past breakups that you have to keep tucked in the far closets of your mind to keep the wounds from reopening!

Man, did we want to say we closed it with a win...:bang:

We know it's coming this year. The important thing, is who will be- and the team handle it? Will we go into a disheartening slump or will we shrug it off and start a new streak beginning with the next game?

I feel sorry for all the Cuse fans who don't follow this site. They miss some great stuff. Thanks again, SWC.
