I see a lot of talk about our offense and how it can help us in games where there's a talent disparity. While I still think that has some truth, I did watch a few college games this weekend and damn near every team ran an uptempo spread with rpos built in. They may not run it as fast as cuse does, but college defenses are way more prepared for it now than back when Baylor had their run.

Agreed... if we don't find a way to run the ball occasionally and use the middle of the field we are going to have entire quarters where we stink just like last year. I haven't posted at all since the game but I saw the same team on offense as last year with all the same flaws plus less over the top explosion. The D was better but we were playing a d2 team so it should have been better.

To your point the system isn't all that unique anymore so we need to execute and add some diversity or the system is just going to lead to more blowouts against us.

I dont think the system is just the up tempo part. its all the pieces that make it up. only 4-5 teams run the play sets we use, time will tell if we ever get an oline that can block well enough to use those running plays to set up the passing plays though.

Good post. I was thinking the same thing as I watched this weekend...there seemed to be a lot of teams running versions of no huddle, up tempo spread formations, with RPOs.

I think the version Babers runs definitely helps with talent disparity at the line of scrimmage. Even more importantly, we are completely immersed in running this system right down to the strength and conditioning. I'm not sure that is true for every program. And then there is the fact we run this offense in the Dome.

We are ahead of the trend and getting faster. There is still a long way to go in terms of adding talent and depth to the program, but we are in a great spot to capitalize on our advantages.

I think there are some subtle differences between this system and what other teams are trying to run (outside of Tulsa, USF - Briles disciples).

There is a familiarity with the spread and the use of nickel or okie packages to stop it. There's also the LB/S hybrid that FSU and VaTech use. Whitner may end up playing that role for vs some teams.

But as stated - the biggest difference is in the S&C being tailored to the tempo. I'd also throw in the sheer amount of reps (tempo in practice) and how we teach WR/QB as a little bit of secret sauce that helps us do it better.

Good thread and a lot of great points. I think that the difference in terms of system quality will stand out once the OL talent level makes a big jump. When you add that component the system becomes extremely difficult to stop. As will always be the case- the line of scrimmage is key no matter what system you run.

With that said when you see the skill position talent and speed Dino is putting together, you can see the greater vision. Get the line play where it needs to be and the sky is the limit. A big part of this is the S & C commitment as well as has been mentioned.

Agree. Our new faster, leaner OL will come in handy when we actually run tempo at full go for a whole game.

True.

But I liken Dino's tempo/pace somewhat to college basketball. Some teams may play zone, but Syracuse commits to it on a whole different level, which can make it more effective when you have the right players.

Lots of quality in this thread. As most have already stated above, the S&C aspect is such a huge factor here. I can't recall another coach/staff being so secretive about their S&C program...I find that so intriguing, especially in today's landscape of social media promotion & teams offering "All-Access" looks into their S&C to entice recruits. I've seen teams make their entire program, right down to sets/reps, public...I recall printing out USC's program during the Carroll/Bush years.
