So do we think that is a pre-call, a GS audible from something he sees.....just curious what the mindset was there.

Obviously the throws and routes are not right but I am more interested in the decision process.

I just don't understand that play sequence ever, let alone at that point of that game.

Especially when we were moving the ball with decent success, it was super frustrating to watch that.

That sequence was awful. Little effort to establish a quick game, get the ball out.

And there were four in a row deep shots I think, the first of the next possession, at least that was my impression.

It made no sense. Especially given how we got to the 39 in the first place.

Incomplete short pass
5 yard Allen run
12 yard Shrader run
8 yard pass to Allen
PI on trick play
10 yard Allen run

We had 4 runs for 35 yards, an 8 yard "extended run" to Allen and a trick play PI. The other play was a short pass for Brown. We then went completely away from that.

I’ve been happy with the playcalling overall this year but there’s times, from just my feeling watching, we run the same/similar thing far too many times in a 3 down situation or in a series. If it works then we’re never talking about it but it definitely jumps out more when it doesn’t work and you see something similar run the very next play. I think Beck will adjust, I’m not sure if he thinks the D is going to call a drastically different D the next play and then he can catch them off guard. And clearly it’s not doing that.

2 of the 3 were to Hatcher right? Gotta believe on the second one it was called because someone saw something there be it matchup or no deep support?

I haven't looked at the replay but watching it live, it looked like we thought we had a big mismatch with our WRs and their CB Jeadyn Lukus, who wore #10.

Seemed to me that we threw it his way a lot, especially in the first half. Almost always on the same deep sideline route.

He did a fine job in coverage however and our WRs were rarely able to get any kind of space against his coverage. He kept with our guys and did not commit interference.

That said, we had WRs open on other patterns a number of times. Sometime GS was able to make the throw. Too often he was not up to the task.

The refs made some bad calls during the game but watching live, it seemed like all the PI calls on us were legit. I think we all knew Wilson was going to struggle against big ACC WRs. That was expected. Great kid. Just not big enough to play against big strong WRs. It was not good to see Johnson get abused repeatedly too.

When the other team dares you to throw deep repeatedly and you can't take advantage, you are in for trouble. And that is what we got.

The 57 yard attempt was insanely stupid (I may not get over this, I'm kidding... maybe not) and especially so given what led up to it.

If you are even considering a kick, you absolutely have to run a quick pass or even a run at least one time prior.

Throwing deep 3x goes against the logic of wanting to kick a FG from that part of the field.

This is what frustrates me about our offensive play calling sometimes. It's like we don't have a plan or know what we're going to do more than 1 play at a time. If you're okay with taking 3 points there, then don't launch the ball down the field like we have 30 seconds to score a TD. If you're so convinced we need a TD that you run 3 consecutive go routes to the sideline, then go for it on 4th down from the 39.

Running the ball and throwing underneath was working, and it's like we suddenly panicked for some reason. That whole drive was very disjointed.

Agree, that was the part with the sequence that bothers me. I'm sure some of the reads are on Shrader but some are pre-snap from the sidelines too.

Do we run slant routes? Shouldn’t that be the most utilized route? Jerry Rice made a living out of it, and he wasn’t even fast(I know, it’s Jerry….but). Seemed like the middle of the field was empty on those throws. I want more slant routes(and Villari)…..please. I said please

It reminded me of the old Dino offense. These sideline passes just seem so low-percentage, especially w/ a skinnier receiver like Hatcher. By doing it so close to the sideline, you're giving the Defense an extra defender

Dino made those throws, not GS. Some of you guys need glasses, my goodness.

I think you put the ball in a place where your WR catches it or no one does. That is what I saw in those passes.

I watched pieces of the replay. I think they said the DB was a freshman. So ok you try it once. But that sideline throw isn’t Shrader’s best place. So you go right back to it again? Third down was a scramble drill.

But to have the ball, down 7, first down at their 39, 4 minutes and counting left at the half and go with that? And then the 57 yard FG? Just a terrible sequence. Instead of down maybe 4 at the half, we’re down 14.

Really disappointing.

This is one to Hatcher he threw out of bounds, he had his man beat, a good throw ‘inbounds’ and it’s an easy TD.

My best guess is that Clemson took away the middle and SU thought they had the sideline but unfortunately Shrader didn't have a good day passing. Now the 3 in a row, that was a bit surreal.

I remember 1 throw to the middle and it was intercepted. This play calling reminded me of Lynch calling plays. Just this game though.

Lukus is also going to be in the NFL. He’s young, so he can get beat, but he’s a Sunday guy down the line. Just for context.

This is on Shrader. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn against Clemson. Other than the pass to Allen he was off all game. Actually his passing has gotten worse this year. He hasn't been accurate at all. Against weak comp he got away with it. He wont the next three games.

Can you confirm if the timing on the route had been knocked off? Can you confirm if Hatcher had been knocked off his route path? Can you confirm if Lukus had closing speed on him? Can you confirm that Hatcher started his route at the right distance from sideline?

I can confirm I watched it about 15 times and Hatcher blew by the guy, Hatcher has to slow down a bit because of the pass and then the pass is thrown out about of bounds. All confirmed.

I can film it for you if you’d like.

Put a pass thrown a yard Out of bounds on the wide out. Good call.
