In past years I’ve kept track of the future schedules of undefeated teams to see who might remain seated in the musical chairs world of 2 and 4 team playoffs for the national championship. Now we have a 12 team playoff. The 5 highest ranked FBS conference champions and the 7 highest rated teams other than them will play off for the national championship. The four highest rated teams will get a bye. I think they should have had a 16 team playoff with all the conference champions, but that’s besides the point. The impact on my keeping track of the future challenges of the top teams is that I will look at every undefeated team. If that’s less than 12 teams, I’ll also look at ever 1 loss team. If that falls under 12, I’ll look at every 2 loss team, and so on. I won’t limit it to power conference teams.

What I will do is to simplify my listings by just showing what games they have ahead that will pit them against teams also on the list. I’ll give the won-lost record of each team, their point differentials, their ranking and their “against ranked teams” points from my post by that name. I’ll also give the date and location of the game, (signified by the use or non-use of the word “at”.

I also have been keeping track of the competition for two fictional bowls I created, the “Pesci Bowl” for the best Group of 5 teams and the Ty-D Bowl for the worst major college teams in the country. The Group of 5 can now get into the 12 team playoff so the Pesci Bowl will go to the best two Group of 5 teams that didn’t make the playoff. The Ty-D Bowl will continue to be the two worst teams. I’ll list winless teams until there are less than 2. Theen I’ll list the 1 win teams for that.

We are now down to one undefeated team:

OREGON 11-0 (373-173) #1/#1 ART: +60
They host Washington (6-5) on 11/30, Then comes a rematch with OHIO STATE 10-1 (416-118) #2/#2 ART: +96 in the Big Ten title game.

And we have an army of 1 loss teams:

ARMY 9-1 (331-142) #25/#21 ART: -15
The played Texas-San Antonio (6-5) this Saturday then TULANE 9-2 (445-187) #20/#20 ART: -2 in the American Conference championship game then finally the annual confrontation with Navy, (now 7-3) with both schools having their best teams in a long time. They could still make the playoff.

BOISE STATE 10-1 (453-260) #11/#11 ART +16
They should have clear sailing to 11-1. They host Oregon State (5-6).

INDIANA 10-1 (454-176) #10/#10 ART: +1
The saddened Hoosiers should still be a playoff team. Meanwhile they get to munch on lowly PURDUE 1-10 (189-418) NR/NR ART: -97.

U of MIAMI 10-1 (492-245) #8/#7 ART: None
The Canes come to the Dome to play Syracuse (8-3). If we don’t make the ranking after Connecticut, the Canes will have gone through the entire regular season without playing a ranked team.

NOTRE DAME10-1 (429-128) #5/#5 ART: +115
The Irish were real spoil-sports, having walloped previously Navy and Army. They finish in LA vs. the USC Trojans (6-5).

OHIO STATE 10-1 (416-118) #2/#2 ART: +96
After losing a heart-breaker to the Ducks, they still have their arch-rival, Michigan (6-5). Do they miss Kyle McCord.

PENN STATE 10-1 (356-161) #4#4 ART: +36
The Nittany Lions had their big chance vs. Ohio State. They close vs. Maryland (4-7).

SOUTHERN METHODIST 10-1 (432-231) #9/#9 ART: +42
The Ponys should gallop all the way to the conference title game. They host California (6-5).

TEXAS 10-1 (401-133) #3/#3 ART: +84
Sat 11/30 at TEXAS A&M 8-3 (357-237) #15/#15 ART: +90
Here comes the trip to College Station. The eyes of Texas will be on that one.

There are now 9 one-loss teams, so together with the 1 remaining undefeated, we are short of filling out a 12 team field. So it’s time to include the 2 loss teams.

ARIZONA STATE 9-2 (336-251) #14/#15 ART +55
The Sun Devils travel to arch-rival Arizona (4-7). Arizona State, BYU, Iowa State and Colorado could all be in the Big 12 Championship game. All are 6-2 in conference. State plays 4-7 Arizona and has beaten BYU. BYU plays 4-7 Houston and has lost to Arizona State. Iowa State plays 8-3 Kansas State but hasn’t played any of the other three. Colorado plays 3-8 Oklahoma State and also hasn’t played any of the other three. This is the absurdity of these large conferences. There should be 8 nine-team conferences, each representing a different part of the country with each team playing everyone else in the conference. Then the 8 conference champs could play off for the national title. In a perfect world.

BRIGHAM YOUNG 9-2 (339-223) #19/#20 ART +42
The only team to beat SMU and they crushed K-State 38-9. So they must be pretty good. But they seem to be faltering late.

CLEMSON 9-2 (414-242) #12/#12 ART: -6
They play a tough South Carolina (8-3) team.

GEORGIA 9-2 (365-204) #6/#6 ART +123
The Bulldogs host old rival Georgia Tech (7-4).

IOWA STATE 9-2 (345-214) #17/#17 ART: +6
The Cyclones last won a conference football championship 112 years ago. That’s longer than the Cubs! They host tough Kansas State (8-3).

LIBERTY 8-2 (320-236) NR/NR ART: None
They also have a tough go, going to Sam Houston (8-3).

LOUISIANA 9-2 (390-250) #22/#24 ART: None
These are the Ragin’ Cajuns, formerly Southwestern Louisiana. They are in Lafayette. They travel to Louisiana-Monroe (5-6) which used to be Northeastern Louisiana, making this the ultimate directional bowl.

MEMPHIS 9-2 (388-249) NR/#23 ART: None
Thursday 11/28 TULANE 9-2 (445-187) #20/#20 ART: -2
They have an interesting trip to Tulane and then maybe a battle with ARMY 9-0 (317-93) #19/#18 ART: None for the conference title.

TENNESSEE 9-2 (411-144) #7/#8 ART: +90
They travel to pesky Vanderbilt (6-4).

TULANE 9-2 (445-187) #18/#18 ART: -2
Thursday 11/28 MEMPHIS 9-2 (388-249) NR/#23 ART: None
They host Memphis and the winner likely plays Army for the American conference title.

UNLV 9-2 (426-250) #21/#21 ART: +4
They host in-state rival Nevada-Reno, (3-9).

So we have 1 undefeated team, 9 one loss teams and 11 two loss teams. The undefeated team, 7 of the one loss teams and 5 of the two loss teams are in the so-called “power” conferences. They ought to get a 12-team field out of that – if they held it now. But conference title games could open the door for 3 loss teams. My mythical “Pesci Bowl” would be between Army, Boise State, Liberty, Louisiana, Memphis, Tulane or UNLV – unless some of those wind up in the playoff.

And here are the Ty-D Bowl contenders, a tight race.

KENT STATE 0-11 (160-486) ART: -92 NR/NR ART: -92
No one can stop the flashes – from losing, Remember when they were a home for ex-SU players? They finish at Buffalo (6-4).

PURDUE 1-10 (189-413) NR/NR ART: -97
Saturday, 10/30 at INDIANA 10-1 (454-176) #5/#6 ART: +1
This program has fallen apart since Jeff Brohm left.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 1-10 (163-401) NR/NR ART: none
They play South Alabama (5-5) and then go to Troy State (3-7)
The Golden Eagles were long one of the best mid-majors. No longer.
