This is the point of the season when I look at the future schedules of undefeated teams to see who has the best chance to run the table and make the playoff. When the number of such teams falls below four, I chart the one-loss teams. I limit this to ‘power’ conference teams unless a ‘Group of 5’ team is in the Top ten of either the writer, coach’s or committee’s polls. I also have two fictional bowls for the two top mid-majors, (the ‘Pesci’ Bowl, named after vertically challenged but ever-feisty character actor Joe Pesci), and the two worst teams in the country, (the Ty-D Bowl, named after the Ty-D Bol toilet bowl cleaner). For the Pesci Bowl, I’ll keep track of the undefeated Group of 5 teams until there are less than two of them. Then I look at the one-loss G5 teams. For the Ty-D Bowl, I keep track of the winless teams until there are less than two of them. Then I’ll look at the 1 win teams. Rankings are by the writers/coaches/committee- when it comes out.

After WEEK 6

The Playoff contenders:

GEORGIA 7-0 (292-64) ranking: 1/1
10/22 BYE
10/29 Florida 4-3 (220-197)
11/5 TENNESSEE 6-0 (286-138) ranking: 3/4
11/12 at Mississippi State 5-2 (248-153) ranking: 24/24
11/19 at Kentucky 5-2 (185-115) ranking: 19/18
11/26 Georgia Tech 3-3 (104-168)
Comments: They don’t seem to be quite the team they were last year but if they can beat Tennessee, they might be 12-0 and in the SEC title game again.

OHIO STATE 6-0 (293-94) ranking: 2/2
10/22 Iowa 3-3 (88-59)
10/29 at PENN STATE 5-1 (189-115) ranking: 16/16
11/5 at Northwestern 1-5 (106-166)
11/12 Indiana 3-4 (179-221)
11/19 at Maryland 5-2 (242-169)
11/26 MICHIGAN 7-0 (299-85) ranking: 4/3
Comments: Michigan kind of exposed Penn State but that’s still a road game. It still looks like it will be the Buckeyes vs. the Wolverines again, with a playoff birth on the line.

CLEMSON 7-0 (270-138) ranking: 5/5
10/22 SYRACUSE 6-0 (216-79) ranking: 14/14
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Notre Dame 3-3 (142-132)
11/12 Louisville 3-3 (166-134)
11/19 U of Miami 3-3 (184-123)
11/26 South Carolina 4-2 (202-150)
Comments: They might not be the powerhouse of the DeShaun Watson/Trevor Lawrence era but with a dominant defense and four home games left, they could run the table and get back into the playoff. Incredibly, we are the only ranked team left on their schedule!

MICHIGAN 7-0 (299-85) ranking: 4/3
10/22 BYE
10/29 Michigan State 3-4 (189-190)
11/5 at Rutgers 3-3 (137-132)
11/12 Nebraska 3-4 (208-219)
11/19 Illinois 6-1 (182-62) ranking: 18/20
11/26 at OHIO STATE 6-0 (293-94) ranking: 2/2
Comments: Can the Illini be the spoilers? I’m guessing not but they can play defense.

TENNESSEE 6-0 (286-138) ranking: 3/4
10/22 Tennessee-Martin 4-2 (225-160)
10/29 Kentucky 5-2 (185-115) ranking: 19/18
11/5 at GEORGIA 7-0 (292-64) ranking: 1/1
11/12 Missouri 2-4 (151-148)
11/19 at South Carolina 4-2 (202-150)
11/26 at Vanderbilt 3-4 (199-276)
Comments: Rocky Top is back baby! Can they beat both Alabama and Georgia in the same season?

MISSISSIPPI 7-0 (286-121) ranking: 7/7
10/22 at Louisiana State 5-2 (236-149)
10/29 at Texas A&M 3-3 (129-113)
11/5 BYE
11/12 ALABAMA 6-1 (315-127) ranking: 6/6
11/19 at Arkansas 4-3 (229-228)
11/24 Mississippi State 5-2 (248-153) ranking: 24/24
Comments: Is this 2022 or 1959? Both Syracuse and Mississippi are undefeated and in the rankings. The Rebels are pointing for BAMA but don’t overlook the Egg Bowl.

UCLA 6-0 (249-136) ranking: 9/10
10/22 at Oregon 5-1 (252-173) ranking: 10/9
10/29 STANFORD 2-4 (161-178)
11/5 at Arizona State 2-4 (161-181)
11/12 Arizona 3-4 (221-254)
11/19 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 6-1 (283-155) ranking: 12/126
11/26 at California 3-3 (142-130)
Comments: That trip to Oregon, Skip Kelly’s old stomping ground, is a big game. Then there’s USC. But other that that it looks like smooth sailing.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN 6-0 (275-159) ranking: 8/8
10/22 Kansas State 5-1 (172-100) ranking: 17/17
10/29 at West Virginia 3-3 (234-188)
11/5 Texas Tech 3-3 (206-179)
11/12 at Texas 5-2 (257-128) ranking: 20/21
11/19 at Baylor 3-3 (227-146)
11/26 Iowa State 3-4 (160-106)
Comments: Again, it’s a league full of good teams, (and Oklahoma may not be one of them). The Horned Frogs will be looking good if they get past K-State but their work will be far from finished.

SYRACUSE 6-0 (216-79) ranking: 14/14
10/22 at CLEMSON 7-0 (270-138) ranking: 5/5
10/29 Notre Dame 3-3 (142-132)
11/5 at Pittsburgh 4-2 (210-157)
11/12 Florida State 4-3 (216-159)
11/19 at Wake Forest 5-1 (247-153) ranking: 13/13
11/26 at Boston College 2-4 (120-174)
Comments: We have given up the fewest points in the conference, (79) and # is NC State with 118.
I couldn’t find a clip of the 1995 Gator Bowl but in looking for one, I found this silent but color footage of the 1966 Syracuse team beating Maryland 28-7 in Archbold as Jim Del Gaizo tied an SU record with 4 TD passes against a Terp secondary coached by Dick McPherson! (Ryan Nassib, Zach Mahoney and Eric Dungey have since thrown 5). This was the first of 8 straight wins after a dreadful 0-2, 24-66 start.

The Pesci Bowl contenders:

Both CCU and JMU lost so the one loss teams now have to be considered.

CENTRAL FLORIDA 4-1 (248-86)
10/22 at East Carolina 4-3 (232-172)
10/29 CINCINNATI 5-1 (229-127) rank: 21/19
11/5 at Memphis 4-3 (249-211)
11/12 at TULANE 6-1 (231-111) rank: 25/25
11/19 Navy 2-4 (140-145)
11/26 at South Florida 1-6 (177-263)
Comments: The Central Florida- Cincinnati-Tulane round robin may leave a Pesci Bowl participant standing, if those schools can get through the rest of their schedules unscathed.

CINCINNATI 5-1 (229-127) rank: 21/19
10/22 at Southern Methodist 3-3 (213-177)
10/29 at CENTRAL FLORIDA 5-1 (248-66)
11/5 Navy 2-4 (140-145)
11/11 East Carolina 4-3 (232-172)
11/19 at Temple 2-4 (88-154)
11/26 TULANE 6-1 (231-111) rank: 25/25
Comments: Will the Bearcats be caught dreaming of the Big 12.

COASTAL CAROLINA 6-1 (231-205)
10/22 BYE
10/29 at Marshall 3-3 (160-104)
11/3 Appalachian State 3-3 (211-173)
11/12 Southern Mississippi 3-3 (155-139)
11/19 at Virginia 2-4 (107-149)
11/26 at JAMES MADISON 5-1 (259-120)
Comments: They can still have a confrontation with James Madison at the end of the season with a Pesci Bowl bid on the line. They just won’t be undefeated.

JAMES MADISON 5-1 (259-120)
10/22 Marshall 3-3 (160-104)
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Louisville 3-3 (166-134)
11/12 at Old Dominion 3-3 (157-157)
11/19 Georgia State 2-4 (179-200)
11/26 COASTAL CAROLINA 6-1 (231-205)
Comments: Not only is James 5’4” and 271 years old but he’s also just one guy.

LIBERTY 6-1 (208-158)
10/22 Brigham Young 4-3 (227-212)
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Arkansas 4-3 (229-288)
11/12 at Connecticut 3-5 (145-233)
11/19 Virginia Tech 2-5 (134-176)
11/26 New Mexico State 2-5 (105-203)
Comments: If they can get past the Cougars and the Razorbacks, (sounds dangerous), they could win their way to the Pesci Bowl.

SOUTH ALABAMA 5-1 (216-128)
10/20 Troy 5-2 (170-135)
10/29 at Arkansas State 2-5 (212-211)
11/5 at Georgia Southern 4-3 (267-220)
11/12 Texas State 3-4 (159-173)
11/19 Southern Mississippi 3-3 (155-139)
11/26 Old Dominion 3-3 (157-157)
Comments: Troy appears to be the big threat but those last four teams could be problems, too.

TULANE 6-1 (231-111) rank: 25/25
10/22 Memphis 4-3 (249-211)
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Tulsa 2-4 (198-211)
11/12 CENTRAL FLORIDA 4-1 (248-86)
11/17 Southern Methodist 3-3 (213-177)
11/26 at CINCINNATI 5-1 (229-127) rank: 21/19
Comments: Their two big confrontations come late. Given the attrition of a football season, that may be a problem.

The Ty-D Bowl contenders:

Colorado won so they are all one-loss teams.

AKRON 1-6 (131-273)
10/22 at Kent State 2-5 (194-230)
10/29 Miami University 3-4 (138-168)
11/8 Eastern Michigan 4-3 (199-229)
11/12 BYE
11/19 at Buffalo 4-3 (213-171)
11/26 at NORTHERN ILLINOIS 2-5 (229-240)
Comment: The Zips have a couple of good chances to get off this list. But even those teams seem better than them.

CHARLOTTE 1-6 (175-312)
10/22 Florida International 2-4 (93-221)
10/29 at Rice 3-3 (168-172)
11/5 Western Kentucky 4-3 (280-159)
11/12 at Middle Tennessee State 3-4 (196-221)
11/19 Louisiana Tech 2-4 (178-233)
Comments: Only one team with a winning record the rest of the way.

COLORADO 1-5 (87-229)
10/22 at Oregon State 5-2 (219-173)
10/29 Arizona State 2-4 (161-181)
11/5 Oregon 5-1 (252-173) ranking: 12/11
11/11 at SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 6-1 (283-156) ranking: 12/12
11/19 at Washington 5-2 (295-200)
11/26 Utah 5-2 (285-156) ranking: 15/15
Comment: The Buff better beat the Sun Devils if they don’t want to go down the Ty-D Bowl drain.

COLORADO STATE 1-5 (73-195)
10/22 HAWAII 2-5 (132-259)
10/29 at Boise State 4-2 (163-115)
11/5 at San Jose State 4-2 (154-87)
11/12 Wyoming 4-3 (163-184)
11/19 at Air Force 5-2 (233-115)
11/26 New Mexico 2-5 (125-158)
Comments: The Rams better ram through Hawaii before the going gets rough.

MASSACHUSETTS 1-6 (84-224)
10/22 BYE
10/29 NEW MEXICO STATE 2-5 (105-203)
11/4 at Connecticut 3-5 (145-233)
11/12 at Arkansas State 2-5 (212-211)
11/19 at Texas A&M 3-3 (129-113)
11/26 ARMY 2-4 (181-182)
Comments: This is why you schedule New Mexico State. But it’s also why you schedule Massachusetts these days.

NORTHWESTERN 1-5 (106-166)
10/22 at Maryland 5-2 (242-169)
10/29 at Iowa 3-3 (88-59)
11/5 OHIO STATE 6-0 (293-94) ranking: 2/2
11/12 at Minnesota 4-2 (270-70)
11/19 at Purdue 5-2 (238-169)
11/26 Illinois 6-1 (182-62) ranking: 18/20
Comments: Their worst opponent is Iowa, (the only one without a winning record), and their only two home games are the ones against ranked teams. 1-11 here we come!

SOUTH FLORIDA 1-6 (177-263)
10/22 Bye
10/29 at Houston (3-3 188-202)
11/5 at Temple 2-4 (88-154)
11/12 Southern Methodist 3-3 (213-177)
11/18 at Tulsa 2-4 (198-211)
11/26 Central Florida 5-1 (248-86)
Comment: it’s strange how this program has declined but they will have four games in a row that could get them off this list.
