As of 11/27/11, these are the undefeated teams left in Division 1A/FBS college football. (The BCS standings are out now and since they, not the writer‘s or coach’s poll determine who gets into the national championship game, I‘ll just quote the BCS ranking from here on in.)
LOUISIANA STATE 12-0 (458-127) is ranked #1
They will play #14 Georgia, (10-2) in the SEC title game.
They have beaten #9 Oregon, #23 West Virginia, #2 Alabama and #8 Arkansas. On the basis of 24 points for beating #2, 23 for #3, etc, they have accumulated 62 points in games vs. ranked teams. They’ve outscored those teams by 137-71, an average of 34-18.
HOUSTON 12-0 (532-251) ranked #6
If they win they will play #24 Southern Mississippi (10-2) in the C-USA title game
They haven’t played a currently ranked team and thus have no "points".
Unless LSU and Houston are chosen, we are going to have a one-loss team in the national title game. Here are the remaining one loss teams:
ALABAMA 11-1 (432-106) ranked #2
They’ve beaten #21 Penn State, #8 Arkansas, lost to #1 LSU. That gives them 23 “points” against ranked teams. They’ve outscored those opponents by 71-24, an average of 24-8.
OKLAHOMA STATE 10-1 (548-300) ranked #3
12/3 Oklahoma #10 (9-2)
The Big 12 has no championship game. That’s good news in that Oklahoma State wouldn’t be risking it’s record in such a game but bad news because winning such a game might increase their BCS ranking. They’ve beaten #22 Texas, #25 Missouri and #17 Baylor by a total of 142-74, (47-25), earning them 14 points.
STANFORD 11-1 (523-244) ranked #4
They actually jumped Virginia Tech despite the Hokie’s 38-0 rout of Virginia. And if Oklahoma State loses to Oklahoma, they would become the #3 team and thus the alternative to an LSU-Alabama rematch. They’ve only played one BCS ranked team, #9 Oregon, and lost 30-53. They’ve also played USC, which is on probation but ranked #9 in the AP poll. They won that game, 38-35 and so I’ll give them 17 points. But their average score against ranked teams is only 34-44.
VIRGINIA TECH 11-1 (361-186) ranked #5
They will play #20 Clemson (9-3) in the ACC title game. They’ve played one game against a currently ranked, (BCS) team, Clemson, whom they lost to 3-23. They thus get no points.
BOISE STATE 10-1 (474-219) ranked #7
12/3 New Mexico (1-10)
Their conference has no title game. They’ve played one ranked team, #14 Georgia and beat them 35-21, to get 12 points.
Comment: If, indeed, the regular season is a “single elimination tournament” leading to the championship game” then the final should be LSU vs. Houston if they win out. But it won’t be, although it might be fun to see Case Keenum, who’s thrown 43 TD passes vs. 3 interceptions go against that LSU defense. Alabama seems clearly the best of the one loss teams. Oklahoma State just doesn’t have the defense for a national champion. Andrew Luck vs. LSU would be good, too, except due to injuries he doesn’t have the playmakers at wide receiver he used to. Virginia Tech might be the team playing the best right now besides LSU and Alabama but that’s the point. Boise State vs. Houston would be an interesting game, (Kellen Moore has 38TD passes vs. 7 picks).
