- We won. Cornelll has been looking to do to us what Colgate did and that will have to wait another year. But it’s not a good sign that rivals from 60 years ago are becoming rivals again.
- We scored 15 points in a row to turn a 11-20 deficit into a 26-20 advantage we never surrendered. We answered every move by Cornell with one of our own. There shouldn’t be a “play of the game” against Cornell but this game sure had one: We were ahead 71-61 with 4:23 left. Aby 2:53 The Big Red had narrowed it to 69-73. Lucas Taylor missed a 3 pointer at 2:19 but we got the rebound. JJ Starling missed a jumper at 1:56. Cornell got the rebound and broke down the court. Nazir Williams went in for a lay-up. Taylor followed him and jumped above him from behind and swatted it away, (was it goal tending? The refs said no, so I guess it wasn’t). Choppa Moore grabbed the rebound, broke downcourt and nailed a trey at 1:35 to make it 76-69. Jake Fiegen missed a three at 1:16. Taylor got the rebound. Starling missed a lay-up but Freeman dunked it in at 40 seconds. Williams missed a three, Moore got the rebound, Starling got fouled and made 1 of 2 to get us our 10 point lead back at 79-69 an the game was over. The freshman will be duly lauded after this game but Lucas Taylor made the play that clinched the game for us.
- And what a game those freshmen had. We saw why Donnie Freeman was a 5 star recruit and Elijah Moore a 4 star. These guys are going to be mainstays for us as long as they are here. Donnie completely dominated with 23 points -all within the arc with 8 two pointers and 7 for 7 from the line. He also pulled down 12 rebounds, had 3 assists and a steal. He had no blocks but I saw him playing as aggressively on defense as offense, keeping guys in front of him. With the problems Eddie Lampkin is having and Naheem McCloud on the bench, Donnie may wind up being out center. Off of tonight, (and Cornell had a 6-8 246 center), he will be a good one. Once guys like this get it figured out, watch out!
- Moore, who looks huge for a guard, had a break-out game of his own with 19 points on 5 for 7 three point shooting. He also had 7 rebounds and 2 assists. He may not score 67 points, as he did in a high school game but now that he’d got his confidence, he should be a steady scorer who can contribute in other was. If these two are still around next year, we could put them together with Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White next year, watch out for us!
- A third freshman didn’t put together big numbers but Petar Majstorovic’s entrance into the game was really the beginning of our comeback. He got 5 big rebounds and presented an example of playing defense for his teammates and suddenly we were getting back into the contest. If any of our big men are there in body only, send in Petar and he’ll show them how this game should be played.
- Taylor came here with a reputation as a scorer. Instead, he’s been a splendid defender on a team that lacked defenders. Tonight, he started to score the ball and field the box score with 2 rebounds, 1 assists, a steal and that thunderous block. He still didn’t score a trey, (he’s 1 for 9 on the year), and that was supposed to be a specialty, with great range. Maybe that will begin to come now.
- Jayre Davis had his best game in a while with 8 points and 5 rebounds. I want to see the guy who had 22 points and 12 rebounds against Le Moyne. I don’t expect that against better teams but I’d like to see more consistent production for Jyare than we’ve had since.
- Kyle Cuffe in his high school film had a very vertical game, a jumping jack who could rise above the rim to play the game. Since he got injured at Kansas, his game has bene horizontal, just passing the ball around, occasionally making a jump shot. In this game he rose to dunk a ball and missed – but he was well above the basket and got there with such a smooth move that it suggested that high school phenom is still in there. Keep an eye on Kyle.
- We finally had a decent game from three. It was only 5 for 13 but that’s 38.5%. The outside game should be a significant part of this team’s attack with multiple guys who can shoot and multiple guys who can score inside and pass. Let’s bomb Tennessee!
