- Last year we started 18-1, finished the regular season 5-7 and had a 7-2 post season, including a trip to the Final Four. This year Ohio State started 15-0, lost 4 in a row and are 7-4 since. Wisconsin started 16-0, went 1-5 and have won 7 in a row since. The wheels come off but they can be put back on again.
- We just need to get Jerami Grant back and we will be a good team again. After all, we almost beat Duke at Duke with him. Even without him, we beat Maryland hung in there against Virginia for most of the game and we rallied from a 13 point deficit to get within 2 in this game. There’s a fine line between success and failure in modern college basketball. We are below the line right now but it’ won’t take a miracle to get back over it.
- The team could have packed it in but they didn’t. Those who left early missed a furious rally. The team was frustrated and has lost confidence but the effort never lagged.
- CJ Fair matched the career high he set against Duke in the Dome game with 28 points. The slump really began when he started missing after that game. He scored 12 baskets in this game, including 2 threes. It was a good sign.
- Tyler Ennis was imperfect but that shows how much we’ve come to expect from him. But when he wasn’t being imperfect, he scored 18 points and had 7 assists and 2 steals.
- We only turned the ball over 6 times, after 5 in the Virginia game. That’s not our problem, although we did have a couple of bad ones late.
- The fourth quarter? We won that 26-19. We also scored 39 points in the second half. That would be 78 for a game.
- Giving credit where it’s due is an upside. Georgia tech, (like so many teams we’ve played recently), played intelligent, poised basketball in the first half and got a lot of open shots. In the second half they got plenty of lay-ups and dunks in the second half off of our press. They didn’t turn the ball over once. They out-rebounded us. And one of their strengths is their ability to block shots and our inability to make jump shots played right into right into that strength. They certainly deserved this win.
- It ain’t over until it’s over. And it ain’t over.
26-4, (13-4), with 1+ to go
