- Matt Park noted that we’ve played three “New York’s College Classic” games in Metlife against three legendary football factories, USC, Penn State and Notre Dame and played competitively in all three, even though we lost. There is a talent difference there but not as big a difference as some people think. We are at least a respectable program. and we are going to get better.
- We gained 429 yards on the 24th best defensive team in the country, (they’d been giving up 315 yards per game). We need to figure out how to capitalize on that.
- It may help that MacDonald finally seemed to figure out that Terrel Hunt throws deep better than he throws short. This team has the personnel of a run and throw deep team, not a throw short and make ‘em miss team. The play caller has to realize that.
- We may have found a couple of receivers. Jarrod West had probably his best game with 8 catches for 103 yards. And Ben Lewis, who had 3 for 58, catches anything near him and he is a guy who can get past defenders for extra yards. He’s not shifty or really fast but he gets going downfield quickly and runs hard.
- You’ve got to give Terrel Hunt a lot of respect for the courage and leadership he displayed in playing hurt most of the game and yet still producing 320 yards of offense and scoring a touchdown. Quite a contrast from the way he began the season.
- And you’ve got to give Riley Dixon a lot of respect, too. Not only is he a talented punter but he’s thrown touchdown pass and had our second longest run of the season for 42 yards, a play that got us emotionally back into this game, which was looking at the time like a humiliation.
- Chuck Bullough finally realized there was no point in having Golston play catch with his receivers when we were down so much and Durrell Eskridge took advantage of it by jumping a route and getting a pick six. You can’t say that our coaches don’t make adjustments. You just wish they’d make them earlier.
- Notre Dame, Louisville, Florida State, Clemson. We need to beat one of them and Wake Forest. Then we’ll come out of this gauntlet with a 4-4 record and have a chance for a drive to another bowl game at the end. We didn’t get that one upset today. Maybe next week. And Florida State and Clemson don’t look quite as impossible as they once did.
