THE UPSIDE
- Rakeem Christmas and Chris McCullough are a really dynamic duo.

Both are athletic, long armed and have myriad moves that allow them to score. They can both block shots Christmas has obviously worked his butt off, (Coach Shafer’s favorite phrase), to develop these moves and he’s become an All-American. Okafor, Kaminsky and others will get all the awards but our guy is playing at an All-America level, even if he never gets the recognition.
- McCullough need sot get stronger but he has great hands. When he gets a claw ona rebound, it’s his. And he can put the ball on the floor to score. As a freshman he’s more skilled that Christmas was until this year. And they can pass well enough to play a two-man game, like AO and Rick Jackson used to do but at 45rpm, not 33 1/3.
- Obekpa, St. John’s shot-blocker supreme, had 4 blocks. But our two big guys, Christmas and McCullough, had three each.
- Michael Gbinije played aggressively, scoring 13 points on 6 for 10 shooting, grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing 5 assists. He looked more like that guy in those high school clips on You-tube than he has at any point in his career here. If Kaleb Joseph isn’t ready to do what Boeheim wants, I’m willing to go with Mike as our point guard until he is. I wonder in Gbinije’s problem is that he’s just not good coming off the bench. Maybe he has to be a starter with a specific role to perform at full capacity.
- Patterson was wide open on all seven of his three point attempts. If he ever finds the range, he’ll suddenly have a game with 4-5 three pointers and will be the player of the game. (Then he’ll be 0 for 6 in the next game.)
5-3 with 23+ to be
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!!
