- Sometimes , during the ups and downs of the season, you wonder if it’s all worthwhile. Moments like this answer that question.
- We may not deserve to be in the tournament but we deserve to be in the Elite 8. Why does the committee no longer look at the last 10 games? Look at Syracuse 2013 and 2016.
- To win a national championship, you have to be running on all cylinders. We saw at the end of this game what we can do when everyone is playing well.
- Mal Richardson, after making only 4 of 27 shots from the beginning of the Middle Tennessee game through the first eight minutes of the second half of this game, suddenly caught fire and showed his exciting talent, making 6 of his last 10 shots. Including 3 threes and winding up with 23 points. He also had 7 rebounds. He’s going to be really something next year, (assuming he’ll still be here).
- Tyler Lydon again came through with big plays, including a half barefoot three pointer- the only one we made in the first half. (Barefoot boy with cheeks of hair.) He hit two more in that amazing second half run. He had 5 huge blocks, (he’s got 18 in the tournament).
- Tyler Roberson continued to play hard with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
- Michael Gbinije didn’t have a great game but he got to double figures for the 36th time in 36 games with 11 points and had 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Maybe he did have a great game.
- Cooney continued his drive to the basket game, (although he never got to the line). He was 4 for 11, a reasonable percentage from his position. I like the way he is playing. And he's going to be the first SU player to play in two final fours.
- But defense was the key. It kept us within range. Really the only thing that gave the Cavs such a big lead was that Perrantes was making three pointers from NBA range. Without him the halftime score might have been 21-20. Brogdon was held to 2 for 14 shooting and Gill who was averaging 20ppg in the first three games got only 10. He was perfect form the field but got off only 4 shots.
- The “Trunk Monkey” press turned the game around in the second half. We got 11 steals and even when Virginia broke the press, they were hurried, 9and harried), so we kept getting the ball back. total feel that our improved ability to make shots was because of the pace of the game and the excitement created by the steals and turnovers. It got the adrenaline flowing and we needed it. We’ll need it again.
