- W>>>>>>>>L If we go on to a good season, people will little note nor long remember this.

- We are 3-0. A lot of teams, including some good ones, aren’t. We are awfully good at making the plays we need to win the close ones.

- Beating Colgate, (#125 in the ‘NET’), by 2 points is better than beating Le Moyne, (#301), by 4 points. Beating Youngstown State, (#131), by 9, (even if it’s in two OTs) is better than beating Colgate by 2. I guess we’re getting a little better. Hopefully we can keep improving from game to game. We need a big jump to compete with Texas, (#30).

- People say we don’t have an ‘alpha’ player. Apparently we do. JJ Starling had the game of his life, (so far) with 38 points on 14 for 23 shooting, (I think that’s the most for an SU player since Gillen and White both hit the 40 mark in 2017). JJ was only 2 for 7 from outside so he was 12 for 16 on his drives to the basket. He added 7 rebounds, 3 assists and block, playing 49 minutes. He carried this team on his back and proving he could do that could lead to more performances like this one. Devo “His confidence is exuding.”

- Also having a monster game was Eddie Lampkin with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists, a couple of the no-look variety, the best one to Chris Bell for a huge three. That doesn’t work well for most college players but Eddie’s a master of it. Maybe his biggest stat is that he chugged down the court with that body for 40 minutes. He’s rumored to have a back problem and I noticed that, one time when he left the game, he walked around behind the SU bench and continued standing. At the end, when Youngstown was determined to stop Starling, Eddie took over and carried us home with his late play.

- The third musketeer was freshman Donnie Freeman, who also had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds and 3 assists. He seemed to be playing off of Starling and Lampkin and was often the recipient of their feeds. But that’s the role of a third option and he’s an excellent one.

- We played a lot of bad defense but we played some good defense, too, especially down the stretch.

- We also dominated on the boards 50-35. I even noticed some boxing out.

- We won fast break points, 15-14.

3-0 and 28+ to go

Net Points

This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points are the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).

JJ Starling game: 30NP in 49 minutes season: 49NP in 110 minutes = 17.8NP/40m
Donnie Freeman game: 28NP in 39 minutes season: 43NP in 83 minutes = 20.7NP/40m
Eddie Lampkin game: 28NP in 40 minutes season: 60NP in 93 minutes = 25.8NP/40m
Petar Majstorovic game: 4NP in 5 minutes season: 11NP in 16 minutes + 27.5NP/40m
Elijah Moore game: 3NP in 15 minutes season: 9NP in 36 minutes = 10.0NP/40m
Chris Bell game: 2NP in 36 minutes season: 27NP in 103 minutes = 10.5NP/40m
Lucas Taylor game: 1NP in 19 minutes season: 8NP in 42 minutes = 7.6NP/40m
Jyare Davis game: 0NP in 17 minutes season: 41NP in 68 minutes = 24.1NP/40m
Jaquan Carlos game: -1NP in 30 minutes season: 10NP in 96 minutes = 4.2NP/40m
Kyle Cuffe game: 0NP in 0 minutes season: 0NP in 3 minutes = 0.0NP/40m

We have four really good offensive players in Lampkin, Freeman, Starling and Bell.

They all played 36 minutes today. Red needs to figure out the other guard spot and how he's going to substitute. Going deep only heels when you have depth.

I'm thinking the top4 players need to average 30ish minutes and let everybody else earn their minutes.
