this system is amazing just like most of us knew it would - 485 ypg with correctable issues that could be fixed by next week

485 yards per game while only being 78th in yards per play...

the meatheads out there like a 4 yards and a cloud of dust approach and think more in terms of success rates. you don't need a high yards per play if you are successful every play - we have a lot of successful 5 yard plays - the number of plays isn't just pace and 4th downs although that is a lot of it

fewer drops + more howard = more big plays. They're doing decent in 10-20+ yard plays but it could get much more explosive - i think it will

clean up the oline play, like you said more plays around 5 and less of the 0-2 yd plays.. how many times it seemed we gained 7-8 and then coudnt power for 1-2 and several times FSU wasnt even set on D. If we can figure out how to run the tough yds the rest will take care of itself. we had 7-10 extra plays on offensejust because we lack a power game.

i'm chalking that up to FSU's defensive line. i can't believe that FSU trotted out that offensive line. they're pretty good at most spots still but those tackles are the worst i've ever seen

yards are great but lets score pts.. still left ton on the bone on sat.. we are 8-3 under babers getting to 30 and the 3 losses we allowed 50, 64, 76 so even 50 wasnt enough. strange that in our wins scoring 30 we only allowed more than 25 one time.

when we allow more than 30 we are 1-14.. and 7 of those in our Nov games when the D collapsed.

Agree 100%.

Our efficiency is up by a bit. Our explosiveness remains lower than is ideal. And we're still cranking out yards and are (even with the FSU's 1st half) being better in the red zone. The O is average right now, so room for improvement is something to look fwd to and like you said - not that far off.

the custis drop alone was a 50+ yd 7 pt swing and a missed FG albeit long.. 40 pts and 535 without any more offense going right. and its not like we ask for 4-5 great catches a game to move the chains. call the right plays and make them work.. like the first drive then ended because ED missed a pretty simple throw to Pierce? thats a 20-30 yd gain and probably pts to start the game. score tds inside the red zone a couple times and we are pushing 50 with about 5 more yds of offense.

Don't get caught up in that. Fsu made a couple stops. Every year we go through this. Yards and points eventually line up

they should stop us a couple times because they are solid on the dline.. but they shouldnt stop us 3 times in a series 3-4 times which is what happened.. we kicked 2 Fgs and went for it on 4th one time when ED thought he had gone far enough. we got 6 when we should get 1 TD and 2 FGs for 13.. we need to be at least 1 for 3 in moving the ball not 0 for 3. we almost got stopped a 4th time too.

EASILY we could have scored 47 (or more) against FSU. Missed FG, Custis drop of the bomb, stopped 3 times at the one, punting from the 38, etc.....

This team is going to break out soon.

Hopefully at Clemson

Play calling in the red zone has got to improve significantly. We do not have the OL or RB for the up the gut power running game that was called in the 1H. Spread it out and score. Play to your strengths not your weaknesses.

I think it was a one time thing to give the confidence and it failed. We have to have options down there

You can blame piss poor play calling for some of that. Our red zone play calling has not been one of our strengths in the last few years.

Two completely different issues.

1. Struggles in the past in the close redzone were purely because of talent, team could move the ball but couldn't win one on one battles in the compressed field. The talent gap is narrowing.

2. On Saturday those first two close redzone possessions were all about Dino playing the long game and challenging the team to out physical FSU. Dino does NOT want this fast paced offense to equal being a finesse team.

FSU is a mess, Dino was well aware of that going in. He wants to be able to call upon this experience in practice and be ready the next time they need it against Pitt, NCSt, Wake, ND, and BC.

You don't have to be a finesse team to call a play action pass instead of 3 straight runs up the gut.

the only play call i hate and will always hate is the fade

I am about as much of a I wanna run ur arse over to score type a guy but I’m more of a I wanna score and I don’t care how kinda guy. Points are points. We arent measuring penal size. Score score score.

So I agree that custis should have made the catch and there were a few more could/woulda plays, but don't think you can really make this argument. The issue we have is that we are good, not great (right now) on the OL, Dungey has been inconsistent throwing the ball (injury?), we have average at best primary RBs and we only really have Custis as a proven playmaker (and even that may be a stretch) at WR.

Not trying to trash anyone or say that we *couldn't* have easily put up more yards, but simply pointing out specific plays in football doesn't work. The teams that are really good make plays -- they still have others they think could have been sprung, but they have enough that they make a ton of big ones. We don't, we still have too narrow a margin.

That said, like what I see from Johnson and Howard and hope we see Pierce and Harris worked in more in the next few weeks.
