Dang, three weeks after Pearl Harbor. Can’t even imagine what the environment must have been like. How many players in that game would be in combat within a year or two? Did players opt out because they left school to join the military?

Probably not at that early stage. I've looked at several books I have on the bowls and on Georgia and found no reference to any "opt outs" at that time.
