There are some contrasts in the approaches of Marrone, Shafer & Babers, but keep in mind that a big factor was which prospects wanted to give us a visit. Each of the three sent out a couple of hundred offer letters trying to get higher ranked prospects. Shafer did not try for smallish DBs -- he took some after he missed on the ones that went elsewhere. Shafer may have liked high character kids, but his 2014 class had a bunch who did not qualify. Lost 1/3 of a class because kids never made it here, or left within a year. Here is one true contrast. Marrone built around a few GROB recruits at skill positions, with JUCOs to buttress both lines. Shafer abandoned the JUCO strategy in his 2014 and 2015 classes. Babers was smart enough to go heavily into JUCO ranks to upgrade at TE this season and to upgrade his defensive units. He did not get the highly rated talent he wanted at WR, RB, OT and DT. Overall, it looks like a deep class, and it might be better when if he can add 2 or 3 grad transfers. And, consider that we now have a decent 2015 class, and two good Babers' classes -- and that is what this program needs. Back to back to back solid if not spectacular classes.
