This article from syracuse.com sure paints things in a different light

I am trying to both keep an open mind that these horrible accuasations may be true and also to Bernies potential innocence. I must say though, if you listen closely to ESPN's Mark Schulz, who spoke with the accuser, is coming very close to creating a story moreso than just reporting it. "Over all these years none of the adults ever questioned him (the accuser) going on road trips with the team, spending time in Fine's office with the door closed, spending time in his basement and then having his own room in the basement and none of the adults stopped it, until little accuser didn't know how to stop it." That doesn't sit right with me from a journalistic perspective. sounds a little sensationalistic to me.

Don't take this the wrong way & I hate to say it, but this sounds like stuff I've been reading on the PSU board.

I think there is a huge difference between a situation where something like 9-10 kids came forward and a situation where one guy has come forward and belatedly a relative came forward and three separate entities investigated and found nothing. I don't see it like PSU fans at all and unless the news has escaped me, I haven't heard about any rioting on campus.

I think the knee jerk reaction...including me...was "Bernie is guilty." But then everything else has come to light and so we just don't know.

I think there is a difference between PSU fans/Sandusky and folks on this boards taking a step back and saying "whoa now, this is news to us but it isn't news to SU, the PS, or ESPN. Maybe all is not what it appears at first blush. Let's take a wait and see attitude." I don't think that is inappropriate.

I feel pretty confident that if it turns out to be true, then SU fans will turn on Bernie in a nanosecond. Unitl that time though, there is enough that is fuzzy to make reasonable fans pause to take a breath.

I felt the same way from a journalistic perspective. On one hand, ESPN never felt there was enough proof to run with the story. But now they are telling one side even though they have never been able to confirm any of it. Weird.

This story never sees the light of day without PSU story preceeding it.

I think the key difference is that the basis of ESPN's report tonight was about the investigation being re-opened, which then enabled them to talk about the 2003 investigation. Given the recent PSU scandal, dredging this up becomes relevant--even without any new evidence.

Yep. Very true. This is all about ratings at the Worldwide Leader at this point. Evidence be damned...let's just roll with it and see if it gets traction.

I would like JB to go on OTL with this Schultz guy.

Still not clear what changed between the last time espn investgated this story and found insufficient evidence, and today when they decide to report. Have they made that clear? I may have missed this.

When ESPN first looked into the story, only one person came forward and his story couldn't be corroborated. Today, a second person came forward to say he was abused. It just so happens that he's the original complainant's stepbrother.

Plus, the guy says it went on for from when he was 11 or 12 until he was 22? What is that? And then he never comes forward until he's like 30? I'm sorry, but this story stinks and probably gets no airplay if not for the PSU scandal.

Agree with all this except for one thing. If true, the fact that he waited so long to come forward doesn't matter. Delays between when child abuse victims come forward and when the crimes occur seem quite common, which makes intuitive sense when you think about all the emotional issues involved... That said, I think the evidence will be pretty verifiable if there is a 10-year pattern in place and there will be a multiplier effect where other people come forward, just like Sandusky.

PS -- Whether true or not in this case, I think more and more stories like this, involving many schools, are going to come out. Pervs will congregate where the kids are, and college athletics can give them continued access to young teens who are vulnerable and away from home. It's really not good.

A curious discrepancy in what's been reported so far...

The P-S and ESPN are reporting that the accuser said he went on road trips with Fine, including to the 87 Final Four and two tournaments in Hawaii. But ESPN attributes the following to the accuser's mother: "She said when Davis was young, he 'was with Bernie Fine quite a bit.' She said he traveled with the team extensively, though she said he did not go on trips when an airplane flight was required because he didn't like to fly. The 1987 Final Four, where Davis said he went with Fine, was in New Orleans."

Even in the '80s, what Syracuse roadtrips didn't require a flight?

I don't think they had too many bus trips in that era. Pretty inconsistent.

There are plenty of people who won't bother reading the fine print- all they see are headlines & scandal.

We might of seen the last of Coach Bernie Fine- regardless of the investigation's outcome. :bang:

Everything about this post is BS.

The actions of SU, ESPN, the PS, and the syr police officially separate the 2 case by about a million miles.

How are some people missing this?
