This disturbs me

I think Shafer's point was that we don't get the blue chip recruits but we are able to develop the diamonds in the rough types that turn out to be very good players by their senior year with development. I don't see anything wrong with making that type of point.

Big difference with Baylor and TCU in those fertile recruiting grounds. Cilmate wise also Cuse isn't ideal for a lot of big time recruits also, trust me I think Shafer will get it to work but we need to try and snag the Steve Ishmaels of the world that are a little underrated and develop them. I for one am not against recruiting more Juco players also. Take a chance with them.

Doesn't really explain Baylor's ineptitude in the beginning of the Big 12. Also, doesn't explain why teams like SMU, Rice and North Texas are so bad.

Well obviously.

The big boys aren't lining up to play for Syracuse.

Kansas, the ultimate basketball school, won the Orange bowl 6 years ago. They didn't seize the momentum but if they can do it, so can we. Arizona is a basketball school and they spent money on a real coach. Baylor is one of the worst programs in history and they finally hired the right coach.

I don't blame Doug for leaving when he did, and promoting Shafer was the cheap and safe choice, but this isn't working. His offensive staff is terrible. Just a joke. The defense is good enough to win games and a slightly below average offense would have beat Clemson and NC State. Demand wholesale changes on the offensive staff and give Shafer two more years since we're stuck with him anyway.

Gross should be canned for not signing Marrone to an extension with a $2M starting point the Sunday after the Lville game.

It might have been to late at that point, but not getting it done in season reeked of "seeing what happened" and bad faith.

TCU and Baylor have been terrible for most of history. Before Cutcliffe Duke won 19 games in 17 years or something awful like that.

Ok. So no more complaining when we are at best,6-6, year after year. We are what we recruit. No need to invest huge $ in coaches, why bother.

BC does the same thing. It's a fact 5 star and 4 star are not really coming to Syracuse... The strategy is developing 3 star players.

It is what it is unfortunately until we can post together some good seasons.

i agree it time we start spending more on P5 type coaches…that we can at least control at SU. When I say that I mean Offensive side of the ball more than anything.

Will the university ever seriously invest in the program?

I don't think it was a big secret that is how schools like Syracuse recruit. That strategy worked fine in the late 80's and the 90's.

Whatever service you were using to follow recruiting back then was ripping you off.

man I can't believe someone with your vast recruiting knowledge only has 79 likes. Your right we only recruited very highly ranked players how foolish of me to say otherwise.

If you're saying we recruited like this in the late 80s and 90s.yes that is foolish. My post count/likes is irrelevant.I had 3 subscriptions to recruiting services that covered that entire period. From 1984 for roughly 15 years. They all say you're wrong.

That Shafer says they target the "under the radar kids" in recruiting. So let's not try to get the big boys? WTH. With this philosophy we will continue to be who we are. What are we paying theses guys for, to stay mediocre? I'm livid. Is this what he settles for? I think we have the wrong guy.
Hmmmm... so let's go the other way. We should not target any "under the radar" kids and instead target only 4 and 5 star rated kids. Let's see how well that works for us right now.

You do both.

well if you read all my posts in this thread I said we recruited the underrated kid with some higher rated recruits so if that is wrong. I suppose we had top 25 rated recruiting classes all the time too. You got links or just run your pie hole?

Links to print subscriptions from 25 years ago? No.Do you? it.You're right. We've always had classes in the 40s to 60s loaded with 2-3 star players.Done.

I have found that fans want you to be honest and when you are they lose confidence or have X amount of problems that weren't there before.

Clemson is the same size school and gets 80K and on a good day SU gets 40K. SU has the reverse situation in basketball. I wouldn't want to come to SU and run onto the field in front of 20K tops as most are not even in their seats when the team comes out of the tunnel. It's a constant uphill battle (pun intended) and yes, the play on the field has a lot to do with it along with coaching but to me it's a reoccurring catch 22 that just never ever seems to end.

Wonder what the demographics of their crowd is.

I don't know bees but they also have USCe to battle with as well and are not "South Carolina's Football Team".

Clemson is part of a larger metro area than Syracuse, it is a state school in the south and it is in a state with no pro teams.

With that said, if they become a winning program, it gets better. See hoops because that is what happens with basketball. People love being affiliated with a perreniel winner.

Becoming a winning football program again won't happen quickly at SU. It will take some good players, good chemistry and some luck. In biblical terms, wins will begat better recruiting which will begat more wins which will begat even better recruiting which will begat even more wins and all that will begat better attendance which will begat better recruiting which will begat a winning program.

I don't either. But they are in a football religion area and I would bet the demographics of their crowds is far more expansive than SU.

XC...unless the team gets good high school players that want to come to Syracuse to play in front of 35K for a middle of the road team recruiting will be a very uphill battle. Win by downgrading the OOC schedule and then compete in the ACC but until that happens SU will be seeing this 6-6 year after year and depending on breaks 7-5 to 4-8 seasons. If this trend continues no way in heck will they be able to pull in great recruiting classes year after year. I love what they have coming in for Feb 2015 and if they hold onto them all I'll be extremely impressed, especially if there are any coaching changes.

True but just upstate NY alone has a very high population wise and that is what is so surprising. Curious to see how many people that have 3 or 4 hour drives in SC compared to NY but you are right...it is a religion for many of them and that no doubt drives them to be there. I'm jealous of this but yet seeing some of the obsession some have to the crazy part of that equation I'm kind of happy the area doesn't act like that because you are bound to get a nut case or two with that many fanatics.

He's lying. They target the big fish - go check the offers - but at the end of the day, they need to find the 'under the radar kids' who are going to perform like 5 star kids after a few years in the program.

Come spend a little time on the Recruiting Forum. Read the threads of the kids who have verballed and the threads of the 2016s and 2017s that have been offered. I think that might change your incorrect assumption of who is being recruited.
