Now, what matters most is wins. But this team is being built around intelligent, hard working players who want to succeed. A pair that stand out to me are Shu Mungwa making the list majoring in Biology and Rob Trudo majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Say what you will about Doug, but he wants these kids to be successful people, and I see a good level of success in that respect.

At the same time let's be objective...there aren't any big time players on there that you wouldn't expect to be. I'd bet our top athletes don't do any better than any other school. A lot of those kids went to SU knowing they'd be role players at best with no shot at the NFL and focused on getting their degree with aims to go onto grad school or a career. If guys like Lemon, Bailey, Spruill, Marinovich, Jones, Pugh, etc. had made that list then yeah it would be pretty impressive.

Well, most of our "big time players" weren't Doug's recruits. What you're seeing is that a lot of HIS guys are on this list.

This is another sign of the off-the-field achievement Marrone said he would deliver. Of course every program has it's off-the-field runs-ins with the police blotter, but it's nice to be at the top of your conference for the right reasons. I wonder how this stacks up with the ACC schools. Something tells me Clemson and Florida State and Miami aren't very close and Duke is probably a little better.

Walk on QB Nate Forer majors in Aerospace Engineering? Damn. That's the major all engineers start in before switching to mechanical. Like how all of my friends switched to business after Organic Chemistry ruined their Biology dreams.

That's funny. That is EXACTLY what I did 40 years ago.

You had to figure Shu would do well. He came oh so close to getting into Stanford.

True, and in that sense, isn't he basically the epitome of what Doug keeps talking about when he speaks of good character men?

I would say the only conclusion you can draw from this is that these kids are good students not much about character, not sayinng that they are low or high character just good students

I think he has established the foundation and theses numbers of awards will grow higher and higher

I don't know. We've had plenty of not so many good character ones too. So while the desire may be one thing, the reality is something different.

Dude - these guys just redshirted, Trudo will likely be a 3 or 4 yr starter for us

I was hoping that Trudo wasn't a center as Macky is going to have another 2 years on the field and he'd have to change positions if he wants to start for 3 or 4. He was the recruit I wanted the most last year and hopefully his center position work will help him be a backup center and starting guard for those 3 or 4 years.

Precisely - just as we were able to RS Justin Pugh, who was recently named All-BE 1st team as a Jr. OL in particular benefit immensely for having an extra year of growth and weight training. And for players like Trudo who have a challenging major (and on the other end of the spectrum, for guys who struggle in the classroom), being able to focus on academics and solidify his GPA that first year is a huge advantage.

I think Justin is a redshirt soph in FB speak.

I started in Computer, then switched to Mechanical, then realized you engineers were a bunch of crazy mfers, then switch to Math, then got a job in Accounting.

Other than the good times, the good friends, the lifelong sports allegiences, my 6 and a half years in college were kind of a waste of time.

Yea, now that you mention it, like the SUAD web site, these things list players by their academic class.
That make it even more impressive that he's 1st team after his 2nd year of playing. Not bad for a 2 Star/NR recruit.

there's usually a correlation there.

macky aint starting again-

if marrone isnt that dense- he understands he must have solid line play from the center -

As an alum news like this makes me very proud. Very proud.

As a football fan... meh.
