But, there's lots of ways to injure yourself badly. My cousin slipped on ice and suffered a bad concussion and missed 9 months of work. He never played football in high school. Life is dangerous.

My point was that you shouldn't be afraid to take risks if it's something you enjoy doing because everyday life is fraught with risks. Many of the most enjoyable things I've done in my 50 years are things that a lot of people won't even try because they are afraid of getting hurt or killed.
 
They did something similar with hockey when they moved legal hitting age. It used to be squirts, then peewees and now they have to be bantams to hit. It definitely didn’t hurt the game. Hitting at a later age helped make the game faster and allowed kids to work on their skill and not worry about getting their head taken off. Now USA hockey is looking at moving hitting up to midgets. I will say that hitting and tackling before 10-12 years old is a bit young. But that’s my opinion.
