This is pretty big news

We all knew this was coming however this seems a bit excessive.

It will start at the NFL level and trickle down, to me the higher ups need to get involved and educate these schools/parents, etc.

Lets be honest we know the NCAA is incapable of doing anything productive. If the NFL wants to stay relative they will need a program to help/teach/educate at the lower levels.

It's a bummer to see my favorite sport getting neutered.

I'd be a hypocrite though if I didn't mention - my 11 year old son is never gonna play football. Got an uncle who played college football at Stanford (defensive end). He's had something like 25 surgeries on his back as a result and has been in a wheelchair (since he was 65). One play his sophomore year ended it all for him.

We'll be seeing more of this not less.

I'm surprised that the new Socialist Republic of New Jersey didn't ban football entirely. Good luck, Rutgers. The only in-state kids you will get won't know how to play the game.

Girls soccer is the most concussed high school sport. I guess we should limit them to 15 minutes of running with the ball. Same with hockey. Let's limit them to 15 minutes with skates.. But that would be dumb...

I think there's a no heading rule somewhere?

just another step to what eventually will be all public schools getting out of all sports driving kids to athletic prep factories.

In the short term, it’s also going to greatly reduce the number of football scholarship players who will be coming from NJ.

As a FB STH, I like the contact as much as anyone. It's part of the history of the game. But that's at the COLLEGE level. This thread is about changes to HS football practices in public schools (compulsory education). So whether school administrators are your favorite people or not, they are required to take reasonable precautions to protect student safety. CTE is clearly a safety issue whether you're a D or a R. In fact, there is mounting evidence that repeated concussive impacts can cause the condition in teens. So people can argue whether the NJ restrictions are appropriate. But schools have a legal duty to protect kids.

You know, they could just wear the padded helmets that they use to protect skills players in practice. 5 minutes a day of contact is insane. You can't learn how to play football in 5 minutes. Maybe 30 minutes or an hour a day out of a 2+ hour practice could probably work, but 5 minutes a day is unworkable.

Beats me. Just remember the recent studies. Gal I know had to stop playing soccer, last year, after her 4th concussion (Goalie). For some reason, I remember cheerleading being very high on the list as well. Gymnastics (not a high school sport) is also particularly brutal.

College/NFL is brutal. That's what happens when everyone is a muscle bound freak, that can run circles around high school players. To assign that to the high school game, isn't 100% honest, imo.

What you are saying is that Rutgers will finally be able to build that recruiting wall around New Jersey, locking in all the football recruits.

so here is a question how are the measuring 15 Min? is it a start and stop straight time or run a play time it, talk for 5 min run another play thing?

Having played both youth and high school football in NJ, this seems like a complete joke on behalf of the NJSIAA. Maybe 15 minutes of full contact during the season is fine, since most teams practice timing and schemes preparing for upcoming opponents, but this rule can not be good for coaches determining depth charts in pre-season camps. Vince Lombardi, a former NJ high school gridder, must be rolling in his grave.

Just read an updated piece on NJ.com on this. A bunch of coaches interviewed are for this, because they say they already don’t bring players “to the ground” (apparently that’s the necessary detail here) during the season. There’s allowances for more tackling during the preseason. I see this going to 30mins (was at 90).

Football: Mixed reaction to historic proposal severely limiting practice tackling

Toal seems to say yes, but does this affect the private schools? Parochials in NJ have long been outside the rules of public schools.

But, there's lots of ways to injure yourself badly. My cousin slipped on ice and suffered a bad concussion and missed 9 months of work. He never played football in high school. Life is dangerous.
