As pretty much every 'Cuse fan knows in 1984, four years into McPherson's tenure, SU beat #1 Nebraska in the Dome. Three years later SU went undefeated and started arguably the best stretch in program history 1987-1992; where the program went 56-10-5 and 5-0-1 in bowls -- which included a Sugar and Fiesta.

An upset over FSU, and strong close to the season, could be the jolt this program needs. We're long overdue for an upset of any sort, really.

This is part of the argument for a tough schedule. Watering down the schedule will lead to more wins and mediocre bowls but we'd end up like the Schiano Rutgers teams. They could never get a signature win feasting on cream puffs. They were a novelty act no one took seriously. SU had Nebraska '84 bookended with PSU '87 (you kinda have to pull off two big wins to prove it's not a fluke). But the only way to pull off a Nebraska-style upset is to play top teams. FSU and Clemson fit the bill for now but both, especially Clemson, have up and down cycles too. I like that LSU is coming to the Dome. That's the kind of game that creates the chance of a Nebraska-style upset.

Three years would be too long for many on here.
