It seems like most of the games we lost we couldn't get a rebound when it counted. Today was the same... In the second half in crunch time we couldn't get a defensive board to save our lives.

For those saying JB was checked out... What's he supposed to do when we play great D until the shot goes up and then unc plays volley ball?

We played a great game to keep it close but we couldn't overcome our rebounding issues.

rebounding seems to be a chronic issue year in and year out---or am i being narrow minded????
You're correct, but this year it is glaringly worse then in regular years. What killed me the most last night about rebounding was watching Lydon trying to get a defensive rebound by himself while two NC players are literally right there trying to rebound it too, and nobody on SU decides to help him get the rebound.

Luckily after that happened several times in a row, JB put Coleman back in and we started rebounding in numbers again.

A great rebounding lineup

DC/TLYDON/TROB/
Then two of these 4 rotating
Cooney /Mike/Frank/Malachi

Rebounding for us seems to be dependent on whether the guards are going to come back in and help. The long rebounds just kill us but even if all three of our front line guys are in position with men on their hips boxing out, there is nothing they can do to grab them. That makes it imperative for the guards, especially G since he's so tall, to get in there and help. We did some of that last night. Just a weird bounce night like longislandcuse pointed out in another thread.

The play Cooney got called for a foul (which I thought was eh) could have been avoided if he was a bit closer to the paint on the long shot. Our guards tend to do a lot of ball watching, but the long rebounds on deep shots are really where they need to track the ball and the shooter.

^ I actually think, for the most part, Trevor is decent at coming back on the long rebounds or at least tipping it to one of the forwards.

I am convinced that what happened last night, and this may very well be the case in other games, is that down the stretch our rebounders were gassed. They have to out jump and be quicker to the ball then the opposition because we don't tend to do a good job of positional rebounding. When you get tired its harder to be quick to the ball and harder to get off of the floor. There were a couple of series down the stretch where UNC seemed to keep balls alive on the offensive boards for what seemed like 3+ opportunities. Earlier in the game I think we clear one of those boards and end their possession. We are not a great rebounding team, but we become a really poor rebounding team as Lydon and Roberson get tired.

This definitely happens for Mal as well. He's not strong enough yet to battle all game long against guys like Meeks. That and playing a bit out of position, which is true also for Lydon (who is actually a great leaper and pretty strong with the ball). Next year.

Roberson is excellent at keeping the ball alive with a tap when he can't grab it. He has a great instinct for knowing what he can grab and what he can't, and tipping the latter to at least give someone else a chance.
