But here's the thing.
Even if the Orange NEVER practice man-to-man...the players have done it in high school and on the playgrounds.
Couldn't they have gone to a man defense against Colgate and not given up 100 points???

Impossible! Just need to play better zone.

Our coach is just so good that he doesn't need to employ different defenses depending on the situation. Just like he doesn't need to carry a full roster of scholarship players, or substitute in game to keep players fresh. Or even have comparable athletes to compete at the highest level.

This answer is YES. I understand certain situations where just swapping to a different defense you don’t ever practice won’t help much, but to answer your specific question against that team. YES.

The answer is obviously yes, but I think it may boil down to Boeheim thinking that learning the zone long-term is more important than winning a game in the short-term. If he wants us to play zone against better schools when it matters and we obviously suck at the zone right now, he probably wants as many reps as possible for them even if it costs us a game here or there.

Goes against what all say here about JB doing whatever it takes to win a single game (see bench usage historically).

And the teams performances since the Colgate somehow indicate that was a "one-off"?!?! Are you watching the same team as me??
VCU is really very good and our guys didn't shoot well that game. first night, too excited, strange gym. Held off a determined and athletic ASU and had to play big strong deep Auburn team in the 3rd game in 3 days. All of them full tilt pressing. I am going to look at them against Indiana like it's a new season, at least a new part of the season.

Then was he supposed to keep playing man in Atlantis?

We probably could have cobbled together 5 members of this board to play man against Colgate and held them to, maybe, 75.

ha ha ha , no we couldn't! This board is full of guys that are < 5'9" and most of the rare posters that are over 6' have shaky potato knees.

You totally overlooked VCU before we played them (based on your post in the Syracuse-VCU -6 thread). Makes sense since they had lost to Wagner, Chattanooga, and barely beat St. Peter's. But after we played them, they become a "great" team.

Arizona St has lost to UC Riverside and lost to Loyola by 18 in the last place game at the Atlantis. They are not very good.

I'm holding out some hope that we can turn it around because we have done that before in other seasons when there was some angst. We have went from not playing well to at least playing decently (or a bit more come March)

But let's not shine up some turds that we recently played.in order to make what we have done to date look respectable.

VCU had like 8 portal guys. Maybe Wag and Chat are decent, wouldn't surprise me. I only saw VCU at Atlantis and they seemed well coached with a strong roster and relentless. I mean, Baylor had a real hard time putting them away.

This HAS to be trolling. Just has to be.
