People willing to believe it's real and a third party claiming they've actually met this fake person. Even a tragic accident to kill off a person who was never even existed.

It's one of my favorite episodes of MASH (and Capt. Tuttle's), and the parallels here are scary. Real life is stranger than fiction.

I think they invented him so they didn't have to be officer of the day.

It was to get supplies for the orphanage. After they had him killed, they said he asked that all is back pay go to the orphans.
