not only did the feed the blowout, but the crowd really was trying to stay in it.. so many chances that whole quarter to get it to a manageable score and we got zip.. then the long throw and it was over. could easily have been a 35-28 game in the 3rd after that whole debacle that was the first half.

Throwing short of the sticks on 4th and 3 at the Clemson 10 or so really summed up everything about our offense today.

Just to clarify, that play is entirely on the WR, not the QB.

depends on the routes though. not all of them are supposed to go past the flags.

On 3rd down they have to be.
In that situation the QB doesn't have time to check the sideline markers.
Sometimes I think the WR takes the cushion the DB gives them and hopes they can make the 1st down with YAC. That might be fine on 1st or 2nd down, but on 3rd or 4th down the WR needs to drive past the 1st down marker by a yard or two before making their cut. The key to that route is all about knowing where the 1st down marker is.

thats not how it works.. they cant/dont all run to the markers, the goal is to create holes in the D.

Exactly, if that guy is so covered, he needed to go to someone else earlier on who has 1:1 coverage past the sticks. Shouldn't be checking down that far if he's that covered.
