Thoughts on Stony Brook game

Stern you keep saying this is year 4 and thing haven't changed as if the 3 previous years were all bad. Doug went 8-5 his second year and you act like it didn't happen. I'm frustrated with some of things that have happened in these games but we are averaging more then 500yds of offense per game. So for you to say things haven't changed is just BS

And some of the special teams have been verygood like th kick off coverage. You need toe more objective.
Doug went 8-5 with a group he didn't recruit. He coached up GROB's players. While that counts for something, don't get me wrong. Doug was good that year! Now I want to see Doug do it with the guys HE BROUGHT IN! He has yet to do that and I have yet to see any signs that will change anytime soon. As always, I HOPE I AM WRONG!

Clueless, and relentlessly negative.

You must be a joy to people who actually know you.

So name-calling and making the huge leap in logic that he is a curmudgeon in his everyday life is the right way to respond.

Amazing.

Go, you are taking posts on an Internet fan message board too personally. Don't read his posts if you don't like them.

Stern, I don't always agree with you, but I don't think your posts cross the line from disagreeing to being disagreeable.

Stern,

What is your motivation?

Do you seek new leadership of the football program?

No motivation! I just gave my thoughts on last nights football game. Don't go reading into stuff or buying into what a few crazy fans here say.

But if we don't win more games and this is another long and painful year, my OPINION would be yes we need new leadership when it comes to football. But let the season play out before we get into that discussion. That's not a motivation that is an opinion I have. Feel free to disagree!

SU had 350 second half yards to SB's 45. SB had 2 first downs in the second half. I would say that is pure domination wouldn't you?

For all your blah blibbety blah doom and gloom, the team is 2 points from being in the BEST CASE SCENARIO anyone would have laid out at the beginning of the season. Maybe that's why people feel the team has turned the corner...

It was a 4pt game in the 4th quarter vs a IAA school at home. They struggled a lot. They couldn't tackle the RB the entire first half. The special teams stunk again. The offense wasn't pretty most of the game. This wasn't the team that played vs USC last week. Not even close. SU struggled today vs SB.

These correctable mistakes haven't been corrected in Doug's entire time here. It's the same mistakes week after week and year after year. They might be correctable for some coaches, no our's it seems like. Year 4!! This is Year 4!

Hey hey hey, that's FCS not 1AA

A coach goes yr 1( 4-6-1), yr 2 (2-9-0), yr 3 (6-5-0), yr 4 (6-5-0), yr 5 ( 7-5-0), yr 6 (5-6-0) according to the synopsis we've been given, fire the coach haven't turned the corner. Boys and Girls I want us to go 9-3-0 or better every yr too, but you have to walk before you run and we are. By the way that coach was Mac, and of course the 7th yr was 11-0-1 and we slew the Giant Penn St. Its ok to be fans , but lets not go overboard.

Once again, Moral Victories. They are 1-2. Reality!

That's cherry picking tho and is the exception not the rule. I am sure there are other exceptions too.

Bees you're right I could have brought up Ben's record also, my point is yes there are things Doug does I don't like, but after all the years of watching SU play from Jim Brown to now, I'm willing to give Doug some time. By the way i didn't say Thank You to you, and the others for keeping this board civil. Also keeping the West Virginia posters who spend more time posting on ACC boards then ACC posters themselves off this board.

I see a lot of frustration and outrage over how the game played out. To me this is what I expected. SU isn't good enough to blow anyone out. Period! I know many of you view me as Mr. Negative around here but I really don't see what you guys are seeing most games. I don't put a lot of stock into the "good loss" like some of you do and find the moral victories. Not in year 4! I expected this game to be a lot like the Rhode Island Game last year. And well, it sorta was for the most part. Where you just watch in disbelief that SU isn't just blowing this team out.

Let's get one point out of the way, this team has turned NO CORNER at all. None. Let's get that notion out of the way. Yes they may be more athletic and play a different style offense but its the same results. Losing vs decent teams and struggling to win vs lesser teams.

Special Teams is still awful. Forget the missed field goals, ok that happens. I won't kill the kid for that. Catching the kickoff out of bounds, is beyond stupid. And yes Doug can't go out there and catch it for them, but it's his unit and he is to blame. Our punter has no touch and just keeps blasting balls out of the endzone. Minus a miracle turnaround from this unit, IF Doug stays he has to hand off special teams to someone else next year.

In-game coaching decisions were awful again. Doug has no balls ever the past 3 years, the day he decides to grow a pair is today and to go for it on 4th down with the lead? At home? Late in the game? Vs an awful team? Why pass up points? Why not add onto your lead? Being up 4 is useless. Get up by 7 and then eventually 10. As Bill Clinton said... arithmetic! Let the math make the decisions for ya!

Bottom line is this team has 9 games left. If you told me they go 6-3 the rest of the way I wouldn't be shocked. If you told me they go 3-6 the rest of the way I wouldn't be shocked. Every game for them will be a struggle. If they are underdogs in every game this year from here on out, would you be shocked? Ya can't be! They could easily go on a long losing streak once conference play starts again. Or they could just win a bunch just as well. This team in any other conference is lucky to win 1 or 2 conference games. In the god awful Big East they got a chance to win a few more than that.

This is a marginal team with bad special teams and bad decision making in-games from it's head coach. And to me (I know many disagree) they have yet to turn any corner or show they are headed in the right direction. Win some games, beat some decent schools then I will be convinced otherwise. Until then, its the Same Ole SU Football!

Why would anyone view you as Mr. Negative?

Here's another: 4-5, 5-5, 5-4, 7-3, 5-3-1, 4-4, 5-3, 7-2, 5-3-1, 8-2, 11-0.

I, and most people here would disagree.

What's been painful this year?

One point game down to the last minute.

5 pt game into the 4th quater against the then #2 team. Beaten because of a handful of big plays. Was very competitive through out.

Solid if unspectatural win against lower division opponent. Outgained them by almost 200yds and left 12 to 28 pts on the field. Not great, but far from a disaster.

Highly productive offense, averaging 30+ pts and 500+ yds per game.

This team is not a finished product and has plenty of room for improvement, but from where it was to today it has some tremendous improvement, and that's what Marrone will be judged by.

Totally disagree. He will be judged by WINS. Not moral victories like how many yards the offense puts up each week.

This team needs block and tackle better and to me it's just that simple, they do that they will have a good year. The o-line could not protect Nassib in the first half and they gave up a huge run by not tackling. I thought the DB's/coverage did a hell of a job in the second half after struggling with play fakes and misdirections in the first half.

I've been seeing a disturbing trend with Nassib, he struggles in the first period and seems to have to throw the ball or know he is going to throw the ball all the time and takes too long to get warm. Maybe it's just me but the better SU runs the ball the more he struggles with accuracy. Not only that, but it takes him or Hackett too long to go long, they do not throw long in the first period. Maybe he should warm up differently and do some long toss like in baseball during warmups.

Here's another: 4-5, 5-5, 5-4, 7-3, 5-3-1, 4-4, 5-3, 7-2, 5-3-1, 8-2, 11-0.
Thanks keeps me from having to post Ben's record, you and I have seen the good and very bad of times in football and basketball, so even though we want this team to be much better now, we have a little patience.

I don't share Stern's outlook but I do share his frustration... It comes down to this:

- 4 years ago Marrone took over a team on the skids... A handful of decent D1 players and a lionshare of likely D2 talent and little depth.
- The last three years have been a struggle building the depth, getting better recruits, building mature players and struggling with incessant injury issues affecting depth very negatively.
- This year, we have depth, we have mature players and the offensive play has been very encouraging under Nassib.

We have the necessary talent and depth to be competitive and win.

- What's holding us back is extremely poor execution on special teams and ongoing big play issues and coaching decisions around big plays (either our ability to NOT be able to make a big play or our proclivity to give up big plays to opponents.)

On that last point, by year 4, these should not be major issues - but they are.

Totally disagree. He will be judged by WINS. Not moral victories like how many yards the offense puts up each week.

As I said in a prior post the term "moral victories" is the most ridiculous in the English Language. The Northwestern loss was a bad one that could come back to bit us like the Rutgers game last year. The USC game was enouraging but we might have had a shot to win that one with a better start and better decision-making. For the rest of the year anything less than a win will be a disappointment. It's not that we are better than everybody but they are all winnable games against mediocre teams, (Missouri will be tougher than the rest but concede it as a loss yet).

It's certainly possible to see encouraging things in a loss and there were some encouraging things in the first two games. That doesn't make them "victories" even though you can see that victory might be possbile in future games, expecially if we keep gaining 500 yards a game. But we reduce the impact of that production with mistakes and failed opportunities and we've had both in every game so far.

We are clearly a more potent team than we have been but we've got to play better football than we are.

Not sure why the angst... At the beginning of the season, we were all worried about the offense.. it's been way better than many of us could have hoped. Our defense is still battling through the fact that we're still young. This team is better than the score against SB. I liked the fact we went for it on 4th and goal.

This team is far better than marginal. Our special teams is still lacking, but other than that, I'm quite happy with the team thus far. All teams have off days and we were bound to have one. But overall, I'd say this team is quite good. We played a tough 3 games so far against quality opponents. I'm pleased with where we are. Our QB is #2 in the nation in passing yardage against those quality opponents. We are a far more exciting team than we have been in a decade. Why the negativity?

Winning improves confidence. On the flipside, losing kills confidence. This team had lost 7 in a row. They need to win this Saturday to build more confidence. I don't think they really know how to win just yet.
