Recruiting

Sensational junior Nerlens Noel scored eight points (all in the first half), grabbed 21 rebounds, was dominant on the defensive end blocked six shots and dished out four assists for the Rams (10-2) in the victory.

“Nerlens really controls the paint,” O’Neill said. “When we take away the paint that does a lot for the rest of our defense.” His rebounding total tied for the third-highest single-game output in City of Palms history.

The teams were very familiar with each other. Noel, Selden, Goodluck Okonoboh and Georges Niang from the Rams combine with WMA’s Jaylen Brantley and Kamali Bey in the offseason to form the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, one of the nation’s best AAU teams.

Your New Point Guard...Is Carmelo Anthony

9 Knicks

Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire get a full season together. If Baron Davis (back) can give the Knicks even half a season in Mike D’Antoni’s offense, no one will really want to meet these guys in the playoffs

To Taft boys' basketball coach Jason Hart: your full complement of transfers to better defend the City Division I championship. Your predecessor, Derrick Taylor, certainly got all of his at his new job at Bellflower St. John Bosco.

Josh Childress and Hakim Warrick working toward bounce back seasons

Hakim Warrick: Warrick might not be in the rotation once Grant Hill is back but he played 25 minutes on Tuesday because he was the backup smallforward. Warrick wound up tying Gortat for the scoring lead (14) with a baseline jam off a Lopez feed and a couple jumpers highlighting his work. He was efficient but mostly in mop-up time.

Syracuse Mention

The ACC doesn't appear to be particularly strong this season (and no, we can't count Syracuse/Pitt as ACC members just yet -- no cheating).

Boeheim Mention

“Our whole game is about getting the guys who can make shots shoot the shots, and the guys who can’t make shots not to,” Huggins explained.

When I heard Huggins say that, it reminded me of something another very successful college coach once told me about Jim Boeheim. The reason Boeheim wins so frequently, according to this coach, is because he plays a defense nobody can attack and his best players take all the shots. That’s great coaching.

Sound familiar?

Speaking of Boeheim, last month the Syracuse legend was asked who he thought could be the one guy who might catch Coach K for the most career wins in college basketball history. Boeheim said Bob Huggins.

“He's got a lot of wins - and he'll try and coach forever,” Boeheim said. “He's about the only one out there who could possibly do it.”

What a joke. Realtime RPI has SU's SOS as 8. Beating six RPI <100 teams is more impressive than beating one RPI < 25 team and a bunch of RPI > 200 teams.
