Time to move on from Cole Swider experiment

I get it, but it’s usually evident who the leader of the team is. I don’t see it on this team. I see guys up and just jogging off. If you don’t get that vibe from this team, that’s fine. Personally, I’ve been watching this team for forty years, and I have never seen a team with less accountability.
Close to fifty years for me, and I'll watch this play out a little longer before concluding anything.

I’m not giving up on them. I see a good team. But, I see the potential without leadership. Sure, they aren’t as athletic as we’re used to, but we have some really skilled players. They just have to figure it out

I’m ok with each player individually, but don‘t like the makeup of the team. Our best teams have a 6’9”’ defensive forward who can rebound, get put backs and dunks. We also need a 6’6” slasher guard like we typically have who can disrupt at top of zone. We have 4 guys who all want to hang on the perimeter, shoot threes or go ISO. Edwards/ Frank have an impossible task of covering up for all of our non athletic players, cover the middle, cover the corner, stop penetration, rebound. Was hoping Benny would be elite on defense, but he is not and marginal on offense. Do think Benny will improve and be a very good player. Very hard team to watch and miss the days when we get corner traps, can throw a press on teams and get dunks, ally oops and fast break buckets. IMO, JB2 would be a great sub to provide offense or a spark, Buddy great with a MCW type and JG3 could be like GMAC if surrounded by athletes. Swider, don’t know but 7th man type like he was at Nova. We really miss Gurrier, Kadry and AG not perfect but much better athletes and defenders. Maybe we will get hot from 3 and go on a major run of win ACC tourney but this has been a really tough start.

He’s just a spaz. Can’t rebound against anyone with size and is useless on offense when his shot isn’t falling. I wish his last 3PA had gone down because it was a decent look and I’m not sure we would’ve gotten a better one had we run something (lol like this team runs offense). It just hasn’t been working out.

Of course now that I say that, he’s going to go nuts in some must-win games two months from now.

Lol. I always wondered why our fans were so high on Swider watching him play for Nova but hes an ACC level player.

Frustrating but he has ability.

Williams wouldn't see the floor at any other school in the league. If he were on Providence or URI hes behind Carey and Goodine. Biggest recruiting flop I can remember.

Cole has to shoot due to the limitations on offense and we don't have any other options for his off nights. Shouldn't have chucked the one he did tonight.

Cole is beyond soft with the ball. Never seen a 6-9 guy get stripped so much. At least 3 times a game minimum. His game was so promising to start the year early but he definitely gets too amped for games that aren’t Brown and Cornell and then can’t make a shot.
You are right he is soft and if he had a little arc on his shot he would make more. He can’t take his man off the dribble. I would play Benny 35 mins a game.

When you keep doing the same thing with the same results something is terribly wrong. JB has to mix things up. We have no offense coming off the bench and our two starting forwards can’t guard a chair. Make a change.

Why are we talking about developing guys for next year... If history repeats itself the young athletic potential building block pieces will run for the hills and take a chance some place else.

This teams sucks and JB has no reason not to be playing Benny Frank and Symir a hell of a lot more than what they are getting now. It's a sad state of affairs when we are calling for players of their current caliber to get more run.

Yep, because they know they are not being benched for an extended period since there are no options to replace them

I hope we don’t, and we won’t, go away from Cole.

There are many reasons why we are playing worse than any team since JB became coach. But Cole is in the mix for number 1. Besides Symir he has the worst fg % (40) on the team and is shooting a luke cold 33 % from deep. His stats look ok but are deceiving. JB said that he was one of the best 3 point shooters for a forward he's had, coming into the season. Cole has gotten and missed more wide open 3's than anyone I can remember. And he would be missing more of them if he was ready to shoot the ball when he catches it. But let's face it, when we really need him to can one it just doesn't happen. He's had a few great games but I'm with the OP. His mpg should decrease for sure. I'm tired of waiting for him to consistently make any kind of jumpshot, especially the wide open variety.

At least Providence is in the top 25. They have 6 Q1 wins.

There’s only 1 player on this team that I truly enjoy watching, and his name is Jesse Edwards.

Everyone else is a serious downgrade from who we typically expect to wear a Syracuse uniform.

Keep Jesse, blow everything else up.
Disagree - love Buddy’s game. Too bad his supporting cast is so weak by our past standards. He has a lot of Chris Mullin in his game

Man….I just don’t see “good team”
Squint harder. The team that beat Indiana and Florida State is pretty good. We have zero room for error. Cole needs to get his crap together. Benny needs to snap out of it. Buddy has to hit his stride. Joe needs to focus. Jesse needs to get some breaks during the game, so that he can play at a high level all game and not get a couple of fouls because he is spent. It is hard covering that corner three for a center. The bench just needs to step up. That is a lot that has to go right for us to win.

And if all of that comes together, we can beat anyone!

A team with little room for error, makes plenty of errors (not just “errors” like turnovers, simple lack of ability, consistency, etc). That leads to a 7-6 team.

Joe has a very difficult time when the opposition is guarding him 94 feet. It's not his focus that is so much lacking, more on his ability to handle the pressure. Some games Jimmy or another player is back there to help him out but Saturday not really. It definitely impacts his results and the flow of the Syracuse offense.

FSU stinks, Indiana is currently projected as a 10 seed at the highest, and even then we barely beat both teams. Even if everything goes right with the personal, the only way to get to the NCAA tournament is if we get the autobid. This team is bad with limited upside.

It’s really too bad that Cole wasn’t able to redshirt this year. The year off practicing with the team, learning the zone, working with the assistants on his game, hunger to play big minutes, working on his consistency within the system - could have been a big help to him and the team in the future. Our transfers who sit out like Elijah Hughes who work hard seem to change their trajectory not only personally but their value/role with the team. He’s 22 now so I imagine he’d have been reluctant to redshirt though. Wish he’d transferred last year. He has a fully developed body and at 6’9” should be much more of a dual threat - inside and out, defensively and offensively. With the new Covid rules, does he get another year?
