Token starter frustration

Where does he ooze potential? I'm not being bratty but I just want to see where people see it? I'm not an expert by any means but I watch a ton of basketball and have been following SU basketball for over 25 years and just do not see anything from this kid. I keep hearing the word potential describing him but where is it being shown?

He is a good instinctive rebounder, he has good hands to both catch the ball and finish with good touch. These are not things that every big man posses and gives him the potential to be a good player. He has been a disappointment to this point but will continue to develop. The idea that he doesn't have potential is stupid.

Coleman's biggest problem is DEFENSE, when he becomes passable on that end he will play more, but right now in the zone he is a zero. The other thing is he still needs to be in better shape, when AO was injured he came back as Hercules, he re- shaped his entire body. Coleman still looks like he is carrying 25 or more pounds he doesn't need.

You have to wonder, if he will ever have the mobility to succeed defensively in the 2-3 zone. With BMK and Christmas on the roster and both being better fits in the 2-3, what's going to happen to Coleman when the cuse starts to player against better, more athletic teams. I want the kid to do well, and think with his size and strength could become an offensive option, but I don't think the 2-3 zone is the right defense for him.

He's played 1 game in his second season!
And we can completely discount and over look his play in the 6 "pre-season" games where still did not look as good as the other 2 centers on the team.

And bevosu said: "And he was injured for a good part of last year." And his play in the games he was not injured (over half the season) showed he is truely a top 5, 5 star recruit?

Common guys a 5 star recruit is suppose to COMPLETELY out play a 3 star recruit no matter when anytime, anywhere. Love BMK, and so far would rather see him on the court than Coleman but he was no better that a very low 4 star if not a 3 star recruit. When FAB came back his soph year, you could see from the first exhibition game that he had vastly improved from his first year. Coleman has not shown that jump. And I'll happlu eat my words if shown I'm wrong on a consistet basis.

Thoughts on token start potentially killing a kids confidence?? What does it do to a kids psyche? there have been occurrences where the tokened player has been pulled in under a minute and a half. The player is playing on such thin ice that they have no confidence to play freely. Fab's freshman year was hard to watch...I literally felt bad for him some games. I trust in JB, so it doesn't really bother me.

If the alternatives are never getting in the game at all or a few minutes of garbage time at the end of a game long decided, I'll bet most kids would opt for the token start and the chance to play their way to more minutes.

I agree, every one of these kids would like their limited minutes to include the start. While we may realize it is not who starts but who finishes, I believe the kids involved like the start. It is an honor.

It seems to me the outrage over the token start is misguided. If anyone should be upset, it should be those who are kind of losing out on the honor of starting, not the highly hyped bigs who are not performing. For instance, in my mind, the potential harm in the token start is not the possible psychological damage to DC2 but is really in the injustice done to BMK, who in my mind is currently earning the role of number 1 on the center depth chart.

It is a credit to the character and team atitude of BMK that IMO, the one truly valid point for those apposed to the token start, is not even being discussed.

I can't think of a player more capable of handling not starting than BMK.

At this point, however, I would not characterize BMK not starting as an injustice. BMK, DC2 and RC have all had their moments (good and bad), and I expect that to continue based on the various match-ups SU will face this season. If we can get productive minutes out of two of them every game, I'm happy with that.

I'd personally rather not play at all then start for one minute like what happened to fab in some games as a freshman and then sit for the rest of the game. As a player I would feel like why even start me and then pull me so fast. If you think I'm good enough to start give me some time to prove I can play.

Not sure I get your logic. If the young player can cause the team to lose a 20 pt lead with 10 min left, couldn't he be just as likely to cause the team to be down 20 after 10 min? The difference would be that in the first case we would be tied, in the second case we would be down 20.

Well in both cases JB would pull the young player before it gets to that point, but in the first case you have your best players on the bench thinking the game is over and with a few mins to get it back in gear, while the later you a have motivated player itching to get in the game with plenty of time to make a run of our own.

OK. Just one last thought: in the first case you don't know which is the better team that day; in the second case, SU has already demostrated that it is the better team.

In games where we may not be the best team JB pulls the young player in 90sec! LOL! that is why people hate it, but otherwise the kid wouldn't even get 90sec and if he plays well he get 120sec...
