Tom Brady vs Syracuse

As someone who went to practice all the time back then, while it was hoped Madei would give us more than he did, he became one of those playeers that were great in the drills and most of practice, but couldn't bring it when it counted with the rare exception. Ton of raw ability but he just couldn't translate it to the game.

Didn't he have a thumb injury at the end of camp that set him back, or at least opened the door for Nunes?

Madei looked very good in the Central Michigan and Michigan games. But I recall he really struggled the next game against WVU in one of the uglier games of the series. We won it (they were horrible that year). And his time diminished from there.

Always wondered if he would have been better had that thumb injury not occurred, because that's what had him looking over his back.

If I recall correctly, Madei hurt his thumb in August and missed a decent chunk of time. That opened the door for Nunes. I'm not suggesting Madei was ever going to become McNabb, but I always figured he could have become Kevin Mason. And given the defenses we had in the 99-00 seasons, that might have been enough to turn 13-10 into 17-6.

OMG!! This is news folks. It was you guys that took it! This is the first time I've seen this since it happened that confirms it was one of our own who nabbed it. That is awesome!!

I'll never forget them making a big deal of it pregame such that they had to use a puny baner instead of that one. Because of you guys they probably now keep a back up on hand in case as the pilfering of this helped create the scene that day! Is this the first time making mention of this or did I miss it somewhere along the way over the years?

Great minds, and such...

Madei's flop was the first of 12 years of continuous kicked-in-the-balls-by-bad-QB-play that we fans have so enjoyed.

Worst safety ever!!! That play by Nunes was even worse than I remember it.

No worst play was the retreating back into the endzone throw off the back foot pick six against VT.

Was this the last time that the Dome was absolutely positively out-of-control loud for a football game?

The only games that really stand out as being close to that level were VT in 2000 and 2002 and WVU last year.

That game was Madei Williams and JR Johnson's biggest highlight, and after the game I was convinced both were going to be really good.

Williams never played nearly that well again. Johnson continued to be great on punt coverage and was a decent LB, but didn't turn into the star LB we hoped he would.

I never heard about the stolen banner but that's awesome.

Correct me if im wrong, but wasn't one of the biggest issues with Williams was he absolutely sucked at the option? I seem to remember cringing when we ran the option with him.

I remember being at this game and thinking how much we missed Mcnabb. Nunes definitely couldn't scramble like him.

I disagree Nunes could scramble for 25 yards better than anyone. Of course it was always 25 yards backward!

I watched that whole thing last night. How frustrating. The safety (which wouldn't be a safety today). Not to mention that Nunes' foot was about an inch from going out of bounds before the backwards mess, if he just could have stepped out. The BS call of catch, and down on their only TD drive. That would have easily been reversed, he never had the ball. The missed XP in what would have been a consecutive record breaker. We should have been kicking a FG for the lead on that last drive, and then seeing if Michigan could match it in a 2 minute drive.

Funny how Tom Brady was shelved though. For as awesome a QB as that guy is, it just didn't happen against Syracuse.

I'd guess 2000 and 2002 Va Tech games

That Nunes play seems even more indefensible now than it did at the time. There's no hyperbole involved in descriptions of the play - he didn't drift back, he pretty much turned and ran twenty yards backward into his own end zone. He did some things well (and, ahem, didn't slide before being tackled when he rushed), but we were limited with Nunes as our quarterback.

Darn shame that that team managed to lose to Boston College and Rutgers (and Michigan). Could've been a ten-win team. Fantastic defense. And I'd love to see Bulluck/Banks/Greenwood on the 2012 team. It's entirely possible we'd be 4-0 with those guys.

And you don't think a coach couldn't say "Ryan don't do that"? There's a reason most NFL QB's do it and there is a reason Nassib does it.

The 1999 and 2000 teams going 7-5 and 6-5 were two of my biggest disappointments as an SU fan. If Nunes wouldn't have broken down a played like a complete moron on a few plays in both seasons, we would've had a few more wins, including some MAJOR wins...Michigan -1999, BC -2000, and VT-2000.

The 1999 and 2000 defenses were really good with Bulluck, Allen, Greenwood, Simpkins, Freeney, Pettijohn, etc. Good running game with 2 NFL RB's in Brown and Mungro. Just a functional QB(which Nunes was most of the time), who didn't screw up( he had MAJOR meltdown moments that completely wiped out everything good in a few huge games), and we would've been a 9-3/10-2 type of team both seasons.

I think part of the reason for the 10 win season in 2001 was switching to RJ, as he was the "game manager" who wouldn't make the fatal error.

I won't go after Nunes because he never, ever should have been a starting QB for us. Going from McNabb to him is a terrible indictment of the coaching staff's recruiting.
