Tony Bennett

Best coach in the country. He gets mostly a bunch of 3 star and low 4 star recruits and has passed Duke and UNC as the best program in the ACC. It’s frustrating we can’t compete and it’s not because of talent.

Agree. There are not many better coaches right now. I put Mark Few up there. No 1 else immediately comes to mind.

I agree. He can get 5 guys from the YMCA and they would find a way to be competitive. His teams ALWAYS play Defense and play unselfishly on offense.

Definitely impressed tonight.

No matter what our faults may be, he had a game plan that left us without much of a shot at defending them (outside of hoping for misses).

The lobs to open the game, then the corner threes, we were shell shocked and never really could do much to slow them down. It was impressive.

He's a great coach, no doubt. With the offense they have, this year's team is just going to keep getting better. Legit Final Four team.

It starts with a system and getting the talent for the system. For the record you couldn't pay me enough to watch season after season of UVA's system. College hoops is brutal enough.

JB had a system on D but time, poor recruiting, even worse player development and expanding the 3 point circle caught up to his system and now that system is complete trash. For the record, this team would get destroyed playing m2m... zone is the only thing that allows our starting backcourt to stay on the court on the defensive end and they don't do that all that well.

At the end of the day it comes down to talent and right now we don't have it and aren't getting it.

I’d say Jay Wright is in the discussion. And I would probably put Chris Beard at Texas Tech as someone who can get there. His resume isn’t as impressive because he only has a few years at a power 5 school, but he’s on his way.

Jay Wright for sure! Can't believe his name didn't come to mind. Beard, I need to see more. He may move into that group one day, but not enough of a sample size, for me anyway.

What's frustrating is that UVA is so good at defense and fundamentals that we've simply resigned ourselves to the fact that that's the way it is. It's just a foregone conclusion now.

We're the 5th winningest program ever, but when we play UVA, we go into little brother mode. It's depressing.

What's interesting is it took a little bit of time for him to get going. UVA missed the tourney 3/4 years when he was hired. Right when we joined the ACC Virginia became the monster they are.

I would definitely put Jay Wright in that group as well. He has had a lot of talent over the last couple years but had zero first round draft picks over about a decade stretch from 2007-2016.

It’s close, but I still think I would take Bennett as I think he has done it overall with less talent than anyone ever has and makes other HOF coaches teams consistently look like they have zero idea how to beat them.

Tony is cooler than the back of your pillow. Not only can he coach but the guy never loses his temper on the sideline.

I think talent is a weak excuse. Most of their players are ranked at what ours are or lower. He's just a better coach at coaching basketball than any other coach in the ACC and maybe the country. They are consistently middle of the pack in recruiting every season or worse and he still finishes ahead of the blue bloods with multiple All Americans. He gets fundamental big guys, guys who like to pass, and guys who commit to defense. Kihei Clark was a 2 star recruit and he completely carved us up.

They do get some talent but yeah it's mostly good coaching/strategy. Benny would be their highest rated recruit in years

I know they don't score a lot of points, but I would kill for their disciplined offensive style of play compared to our street ball.

Yeah then you look at this championship roster. Incredible. 5 nba players and some legit rotational guys.

i feel that way vs UNC as well. They just know how to the beat the zone.

They’re kids hustle more and that’s comes from the coach. Also they hit open shots. We had a TON of wide open threes that missed...they made them. Uva is a nice team but will get exposed by a team with an inside game and shooters. We have neither.

Agreed. Beard needs to show he can maintain this kind of success over a long period of time.

The quality of shots they got compared to us wasn’t close. It also appears they have a legit strength and conditioning program compared to our pizza and marb light regimen.
