Top 5 of the Last 50: Wide Receivers

I stopped by sports-reference just to jog my memory. That stupid-stupid-stupid Pitt shoot out was the Amba year. He had 5 receiving touchdowns tds and we lost! Ugh.

Also for how great his numbers were that year, Ishmael was right there the next year with similar numbers.

Idk who my 5th would be. Maybe Ishmael. Maybe Erv.

I just remember right before they showed up on campus we were all very excited for Ashton Broyld because he was capable of showing any amount of athleticism.

Kevin Johnson isn't in the Top 10 in SU history in receptions, receiving yards, or receiving TDs so I don't see how he would make the Top 5 all-time. Great special teams player, though.

I would go...

1. Marvin Harrison
2. Rob Moore
3. Mike Williams
4. Steve Ishmael

And then 5th is tough... there is Spotwood, Erv Phillips, Alec Lemon, Gadsden, Scott Schwedes and a handful of others. Maybe I'll just stick with the above four as a "Mount Rushmore" so I don't have to choose.

It's tricky with receivers because once Dino took over in 2016, we transitioned from a rush-first to a pass-happy offense, thus majorly skewing the receiving stats.

If Johnson shouldn't be considered for all time top 5 based on stats, should Spotwood? Their stats are almost identical. Johnson didn't start learning the position until his redshirt freshman year. Turning himself into a 2nd round pick is pretty good. I'm not saying he should be top 5, but he's right in with group of guys you listed.

How is Art Monk not on your Mount Rushmore?

He’s definitely not top 5 but Shelby Hill was pretty damn good, especially his senior year year in 1993. Led the Big East in receiving yards with 937 averaging 16.7 yards per catch. Marvin Harrison was 3rd in yardage in big east that year.

Fair point re: Monk. I didn’t see him in the Top 10 in catches, yards or TDs, but he was a first team All-American in 1979. That probably gets him in the Top 5 by default.

You have to consider eras. Monk is top 3.

That's really not all that surprising. He spent his first 3 years at RB.

When living on South Campus we were playing videos games out back & he had his couch outside. I asked him if he needed help carrying it back inside, and he just flung it up on his shoulders.

And that we just didn't throw the ball. In 1978 we had 133 pass attempts... for the whole season. In 1977 it was 208, in 1976 it was 142. It was a different era.

Even in 1979 Monk only had 40 catches for 716 yards. It's like how Ernie Davis won the Heisman with only 823 yards, or that Jim Brown's best year was 986 yards. Different eras.
