I'm an alumnus. The closest I've been to being a townie is when I was assigned to Griffiss AFB in Rome.

Yep, Syracuse will always be home to me. Really miss it this time if year. Even after I moved South, I would always come home for Christmas. Haven't been up there since before Covid but hope to soon
When I was in the service for 4 years my father would always send the sports page during the football and basketball seasons so I could keep up to date. I was overseas from middle of 65 to beginning of 68.

Right or wrong the Syracuse brand represents not only the school but it's become part of the regional identity. I left CNY when I graduated HS (undergrad the SUNY route and post-grad in the midwest, but I have multiple family members who attended SU/SUNY Update/Crouse) and have lived all over the USA since. I cannot tell you how many folks say something, sometimes as brief as a 'Go 'Cuse', sometimes they want to tell you their whole life connection to Syracuse. When you're in a far off land (sometimes only as far an PA or OH) and you see the blue and orange, it tends to bring out those who can relate.

My wife always tells our kids "If there's a toothless Syracuse fan in Timbuktu, your Dad will find them and they'll be best buds within 5 mins"
I do the same thing when traveling (like at Disney, for ex) and see an SU t-shirt or hoodie - "Go Cuse." Usually I get a nod or a wave. Rarely a stop and talk. And if they just give me the stink eye, I know they picked up the gear at a thrift store after the Gerg years.

Who we are. The debates for the comments. The results of the poll may inform the answer though. You have to be some lunatic fan to spend as much time on here as I do and many of you do.
Ha! I have an order for my daily online activity. Check my fantasy teams, NunesMagician, SyracuseFan. Every day, multiple times a day.

I came to CNY to attend Le Moyne in 1987. My local friends there always rooted hard for SU sports and I refused. My thought was, "I go to Le Moyne; I'm not rooting for some other school." I started attending football games with friends around 1992. I can tell you the exact spot where I was sitting on the living room floor in my apartment with a plate full of wings when Gedney got tackled on the three vs. Miami. Got season tickets in 1997, and that's all she wrote. Been in ever since.

I'm now townie and proud. And really frustrated.

Born and raised in Rochester.
1977 SU/ESF alum.
Got to live in Liverpool for six of the best years in SU sports history (1985-1991).
Drive in from WNY for football games.
I like pro sports, but only SU can make or ruin my day.

LA? Didn't realize that.

I'd figure the NCR, ATL, SFL or CNY

I went to the football game against USC at the Coliseum and the Aircraft carrier game in San Diego. Both events were about 10 years ago. Decent amount of Orange fans for both. I really wish Syracuse played a game each season in California.

Maybe that might require research. DMV is filthy with SU grads. Barely a day goes by where I don't see SU stickers on cars.
Yup Maxwell and to a lesser extent Newhouse floods DC. And many more DMV natives attend and go back home to work with a variety of degrees.

I think it‘s Tri-state, DMV, SoCal then an even mix of Boston/Philly

Townie through and through. But, also almost an alum, long story I’ll try to make short. As I wrote a post on in the Verse recruiting thread my Syracuse loyalty goes deep as if I went there.

Difficult for many to understand though maybe not for many here. To get it across gonna have to go down the narcissist path a bit to get it it across.

It’s become all the deeper since connecting with similarly invested friends the past 15-20 years through Fine Mess who similarly share the passion.

As life has gone on hs and college friends have moved to all areas of the country thus connecting less, these guys and gals have taken the enjoyment, meaning and connection/loyalty to the next level in these later years. This crew has become some of my best friends from this shared love of all things SU.

The early years: my mother worked at SU and wasn’t just a devoted SU employee but a hardcore passionate fan of the athletic programs letting me tag along.

The BEST moments of my youth were centered around SU sporting events connecting with family and friends tailgating etc. celebrating the good times commiserating in the bad, just like today. Freezing your arse off in the snow and rain in the concrete bowl of archibold makes for a lifelong connection!

And then the football angle that almost made me “both” an alum as well as a townie. My hs coach at west genny was an SU alum connected to Coach Ben and Ernie, played/went to SU, was successful there, and remains a huge life influence connected to SU, then big time, now to a lesser extent.

So back then……..Coach O’Leary and Coach Mac made an impact on me that has lasted a lifetime when they (lightly) recruited me out of hs. The interactions with those two larger than life personalities are the life moments you never forget, including the recruits go to spot with lunches at Danzers.

But Like Pitt, PSU, NC, NC st., RU, etc. all looked but none offered a scholarship and instead offered as a walk on as I was a gangly 6’1” 195lb kid coming out of hs (no such thing as weight lifting programs in hs back in the late 70’s/early 80’s).

Wanted to play some football for four years so turned down offers from FCS type schools and went the academic route to Div 3 Hamilton. From discovering weight lifting in college turned into a 6’2” 235 lb, AA etc. type kid, still holding many D records there to this day, some in 3 years (played 4 but one years stats were lost!), was the “Div 1 kid playing Div 3” on the pro tryout, point is almost did go to SU (again) as shortly after starting at Hamilton was looked at once more and almost transferred thru Coach O’Leary back to SU.

Never forget laughing with Coach O about the “egg heads” as he called them at Hamilton but by then I’d found my niche with an eye already to the post football/college world and reality.

Was the toughest, but best for many reasons, decision ever made in staying where I was. Football is a relatively small fraternity so stayed connected in the SU world so, yes, I’m a townie dedicated Cuse fan but in many respects feel like I’m university connected too.

Regardless from all this and this place here, the Cuse passions and loyalty have always and continue to run deep which is why this is a special place as with anyone who finds themselves here these are all same qualities we share.

Here’s hoping and looking forward to more good times to celebrate going forward. LGFO!

Yeah not kidding it’s nuts. Ha just went and checked, looks like they somehow found some but a bunch remains vanished into the pre internet ethers. Listed like this: 1981, 1983-1984, looks like 1982 never happened! Motha effers rooked me 10 sacks! lol

Been done. We played USC about 8 years back at USC.
I am not sure LA is 2nd. It is also a hard market as it is very spread out geographically and getting to events is very difficult with the traffic.

Mother was an SU grad, and I grew up 2 hours east of Syracuse in Gloversville. I went to SU football games as a kid, and saw all of the greats. Floyd, Larry, the real 44s. Then I ended up going to SU, which many of you know, and have served in alumni engagement volunteer positions for 19 years. I bleed Orange and love SU football as my first sport but basketball is a very, very close 2nd and now women's basketball. My Orangedom grows every year. Moved from Metro NY to AZ 12 years ago, and since moving, I bought football season tickets, and women's basketball season tickets. So I guess townie, and alum, although I just checked alum. Oh, I also lived in Syracuse for 3 years after graduating and had men's basketball season tickets at Manley. So definitely there is townie in me.

Wait a minute I'm confused now. How were we supposed to answer the poll? Were we supposed to click on who we are (what I did) or who we think are the diehard fans? tbh, I'd like to know who we are. My guess would be that this board is 2:1 in favor of townies and former townies.
I thought the same thing, I thought the poll was asking how we were connected

Yes, I am on here way too much. I find it cathartic and a way to let off steam after a loss and a place to jubilantly celebrate a win. On non-game days it is a place to debate current topics and issues.
