I’m beginning to think these current rules are bad news for programs that aren’t factory schools. The Wake Forest QB Newman is transferring and rumored to be likely headed to Oregon. Will this be the new norm to expect? If a regular Power-5 program has a great player is it more and more likely that He transfers to raise draft profile? What if ED tried to do this a couple of years ago?

Curious what others think but the gap between the 8-10 factory schools and the rest is growing larger and larger.

Agreed. Newmann a starting quarterback is not what I think folks had in mind..

It is a little sad when a D-1 starting QB ditches his team for another school. He's supposed to be the leader of the team.

I see absolutely no problem with a guy that graduates in 4 years and can go to any program of his choosing. As for the immediate eligibility regarding the portal players and putting it into the NCAA's hands? That $eem$ to be a problem.
I think Newman has every right to do what he did and don’t fault him. The NCAA is not doing this for the player though. They are doing this because it is an additional way for the most popular/profitable programs for the NCAA to strengthen themselves. Regardless if it is at the expense of lesser programs.

I’m just sick of the same 8-10 schools that finish at the top each year. Until people get tired of watching teams like Oregon, Alabama and OSU play each other every year, nothing will change.

Yeah, here’s a terrifying thought...what if TD decided to enter the portal for whatever reason? (I’m not starting rumors, etc.)
Where would that leave this program?
Just a thought exercise on the dangers of the portal outside of the mass exodus seen at UConn, etc.

I don't have a problem with it, if a kid isn't happy let him leave.

Will it happen yes but I don't think there is a lot of behind the scenes going on saying "hey kid, enter the transfer portal and we will take you at such and such university."

Most kids leave for legitimate reasons or have their degree.

If these schools are already hoarding the most talented players, it’s not necessarily going to be the best move to transfer to one of these elite schools (assuming the goal is to grab a starting job and improve draft status).

Most fans want the student-athletes to have some free-will and to not have to deal with NCAA bureaucracy but it’s a double-edged sword.

Yes. Unless these kids are Grad Transfers or drop down to an FCS school they are going to have to sit a year. Following the transfer portal there are a lot of kids in there that seem to be transferring because they aren't getting the playing time.

Newman is a grad transfer who sat behind Wolford before he got the starting spot. I think he paid his dues to Wake.

He would have to sit out a year, which is how the transfer rules have always been. UNLESS, he were to transfer to Ohio St, in which case he could play immediately.

We would become a much more attractive site for QB's entering the portal

Grad transfer isn’t new though?

He graduated. Put in his time on and off the field. He should be able to go where he desires. I'm all for free agency in college athletics. Regular students transfer to other schools too if it fits their needs.

im not sure how Newman transferring anywhere ups his draft stock. he was a starter at a school that runs a high volume offense in a P5. if anything it exposes that passing is where he struggles. now if he wants a shot at a title thats a different story

Yeah and Wake lost to us and barely had a better record despite what felt like their best season ever.

Good for him for bolting they probably make him compete for his job in the spring why not leave?

The "transfer portal" is really just listing of which players are looking to leave their present school that allows all the schools to know simultaneously who is looking instead of just a few (the ones the players themselves contact) to know it. It gives everyone the same information level on players that choose to let the other schools know they're willing to transfer. IIRC, there's no obligation to put your name into the portal; you can just transfer to another school.
